What about this young lady?

Births Dec 1838 (>99%) MULLIGAN Mary Ann Manchester (javascript:golink() 20489 (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl?vol=20&pgno=489&type=Births&start=1838&sq=4&end=1838&eq=4&v=MTE5NTU4MDEwMjoxY2I0ZDdiZGYxMmM0ZDU0ZTlkODA0MTU2 ODc2MWY3MmM5ODUwZWJl&jsexec=1&mono=0&action=Find)

Manchester includes Bradford in this time frame.
|soapbox| I nearly |computer| when I saw this :D
I think I once heard that Manchester might have a district called Bradford, but the real Bradford is and always has been in Yorkshire. (And that's saying nothing about other Bradfords down south - those on Avon (Wilts) and Tone (Somerset) are two that spring to mind.) Having said that, if the birth can't be found in Bradford, Yorkshire, it could be in one of the others, and the entry which Copper found might be correct.

To be honest I thought that Bradford was in Yorkshire. When Free BMD found that entry I did click on Manchester and it told me that it included Bradford.

With the limited info from Sooty I had to assume that Bradford in this case was up north.

Perhaps Sooty could tell us which county his Mary was born in according to the census.

You would need to buy the certificate to find the names of her parents. Have you tried finding her in earlier census as she should be with her parents?

I find that searching for siblings in the GRO birth index helps make things clearer. Sometimes the only way back is to get the certificate for a sibling if your direct ancestor was not registered or born before July 1837.

Note what Arthur K said about Bradford - it has always been in Yorkshire. The Manchester Bradford is an area of Manchester, we think.

You can always edit your message after you have posted it if you then spot errors :D

Sooty, I would like to see this entry, it's most unusual for a census to show two names for a person.
I can't find a Mary Claypole or Mary Mulligan born c.1837 anywhere in England in 1901.
There are no Claypoles born in Bradford. A few Mulligans, but no Mary Mulligan.
Should I blame the indexing on a certain site? :)

I don't think there's a spell checker on this site. You could compose your mail in your word processor, then copy here once you're happy with it.

There is a Mary Claypole married to Isaac on the 1881 (RG11 Piece / Folio 4664 / 5
Page Number 7) and there is a marriage in Sheffield 1864 with a Mary Mulligan on the same page. The age and place of birth fits with the 1881 so I guess this is the lady.

In 1871, her year of birth is c1833, again in Bradford. RG10; Piece: 4694; Folio: 143; Page: 45.

The marriage cert would give father's name (finger's crossed she is not illeg). That would make searching for her baptism/birth easier given the variance in age.

It looks like your Mary Mulligan was probably born before civil registration (July 1837). This means that you need to search for her baptism in Bradford, Yorkshire.

YES COPPER ,BUT YOU WOULD EXPECT TO FIND HER IN 1841 CENSUS OF BRADFORD ?

Yes unless the family was missed out - it did happen. Some parts of the census may not have survived. There is nothing we can do about that I am afraid.

They have been transcribed incorrectly on the site you are using. You then have to be creative in trying to search for them.

What is the name and occupation of her father on Mary's marriage certificate?
