View Full Version : Special Constables

Hello,
One of my great grandfathers was made a Special Constable in the First World War. He would have been aged 40 to 44 during this time.
The way I've understood it, Special Constables were set up through an Act of Parliament in order to protect the water supply. As Laundry work was a reserved occupation, and he was a Laundry owner, this seems rather apt.:D
Any suggestions as to how I might find out a bit more about the Specials during this time, specifically any records for St Albans?
I've visited the FHS at Hertford, but they were unable to help.
Thanks in anticipation.

Maybe the route Jan, is to go through the police instead of the FHS.
Looking at some of the sites on google the Specials seem very proud of their history and rightly so....

I just had a look at the first link. Whilst realising the site is about special constables and not the events that took place in Manchester in 1819, I think a glance at the link below may give you a slightly fuller picture of the events.

:D I definitely don't mind you intruding either,
your knowledge is far greater than mine
seeing as I was not even sure where St. Albans is,
somewhere North of Watford, I recall |book2|

You are right, Mutley,"Snorbens", as an Australian friend once addressed a letter to me, is north of Watford and is Hertfordshire's only Cathedral city. |hug|
