Please can someone help me????
I've been searching for SUSAN TOLLIDAY ( in the 1841 census) who I know died Jun 1850 in Huntingdon ( vol14 p 135).
Can I find her.....|banghead|

She was born c 1801 as she died 22/5/1850.
Married to Edward Tolliday, who then may have died (??sept 1857).
One of her children was also called Edward( b 1823 Alconbury)but of course not knowing where Edward and Susan were born- they could have been in any county.
(I also still can't track Edward Snr in the 1851 census)

Have you tried workhouses and other insitutions, where people are usually only recorded by their initials in early census returns?

Also in the 1841 census, there's one family in Alconbury who are recorded as 'not known' with approximate ages next to them.
See HO107.450/1 f7 p9

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. No census was complete when conducted and subsequently bits were lost or damaged. And of course the 1841 census wouldn't be very informative even if you had found it.

Stick to BMD records. You've got a pointer to where one of the children was born which is a good start.

Thankyou both!
Geoffers..How can I pull up that census page on Ancestry without a name??
Just doesn't seem to appear with'unknown ' as the name??
Do you know a short cut or do I just need to trawl through each entry??? ( can't you tell I'm self taught!!)

Are you able to give me a name please on the same page so I can follow on from there?? :)

Sorry, can't help you there as I don't use that site. If it has the facility to search on address, you might try that, or trawl through the pages.

Enter the reference details that Geoffers provided. No name is needed.

The company in question doesn't undestand the 1841 census and half the references are wrong. To work round this, leave out the page number from Geoffers' reference.

Ha!!! Done it and found the page!
See what you mean about the page numbers- that was the problem!
Found the 'unknowns' but their ages are difficult to tie in.
Worth bearing in mind though...thanks- I've also learned some more 'puter skills.:)

Thanks.

I appreciate that the ages don't 'fit' - but - the census enumerator has gone to the trouble of trying an adjacent property (not all did this) and asked who the missing people were. The respondent has given the best answer they can, and guessed ages can be very inaccurate.

Quite a few properties in census returns have simply 'gone away' or something along those lines and so that is one family that is unlikely to be located.

Must admit it's the first time I've seen 'unknown' on any of my census details- usually it's place of birth that is unknown or guessed at.
One good thing in this record is that the sex of each character is written up with their aprox age.
My family were Ag Labs, so at least this family were in the right company!

Edward Snr was alive at the time of his son Edward Jnr's wedding in 1855 (labourer)
I found a death for an Edward Tolliday in Huntingdon for Sept 1857 which could be my chap!, so he really must be in hiding somewhere!!!!
Was there just the Union Workhouse in Huntingdon- or others I could check out?
Where on earth would I find prision records for that area??
I have also checked out Alconbury Weston on Ancestry, but nothing there.
Militia records may show something, but then again- where do I go for that??( and would they want a 40 /50yr old??)
