hi, i have just joined the BG and would like to say Hello. I have been tracing my ancestory for about 6 years now and have found some interesting things. I do get frustrated when you put all the details in search, date of birth etc, and it comes up with thousands of names, dates, etc that are nowhere near the ones you put in. It's like |banghead|. I am at present trying to find a relative, Ernest Hall who died in India during WW1 and have one possibility, but it dos'nt give me enough information.

Hello Shirley and welcome to Brit-Gen |wave| Everyone here is very friendly and helpful, albeit a bit loopy (yes, loopy, Bo Peep! :D)

Do you have any further details about Ernest (age/birth year/parents etc)?

Have you checked out the Commonwealth War Graves Commision website?

Bye for now,

Jan

Can you give any more information? Did he have any other forenames? Where was he born and when? Do you know his regiment? Do you know when he died?

He was born 1887 in Athelone, Roscommon where his father John Bradley Hall was then stationed. He lived in Reading Berkshire, Wilson road, until he went into the Army. His father was in the Royal Berkshire regiment and they all lived at Depot barracks (Brock Barracks) until the father died in 1899, then they moved out of army quarters. His mother Ann Hall, died in 1910, so his next of kin was his eldest brother Alfred john Hall. My father and older uncles would have proberly known this but alas, they have all died and I didnt get into ancestary until after they had. Oh for hindsight! My dads cousin only knows he was killed in India during WW1

I've gone through the 'Soldiers killed in The Great War' database and cannot find one matching the detail you give. I searched on just the surname and born Athlone, just the surname and born Roscommon, just the surname and residence Reading, and finally the surname and forname.

I couldn't find a relevant entry in the National Roll of the Great War.

I tried the GRO Army Death Overseas index and also the GRO index of War Deaths (OTher Ranks) and War Deaths (Officers) - again nothing matches the detail that you have provided.

Was Ernest his full name? COuld he have been injured/fallen ill in India and then been brought back to England to die, possibly dying on the way?

I recommend that you double-check my searches in case I missed the entry.
