The 'Heryet' name sounds French, but I can't find anything else out about the one I have. I have a George Lawrence Heryet marrying an Elizabeth Barton in Hartlepool in June 1910. Both died in the summer of 1942, the former aged 66 (putting a birth about 1876). George was a Labourer and his father, John Heryet, a coachman. I think the problem is probably that the spelling of the name changed. There should be possibilities in the census data for 1901, 1891, and 1881.

Any ideas?

David

I think this is the family in 1881. George is known by his second name of Laurence. (NB in 1910 marriage index the spelling is Laurence and not Lawrence). I found them by putting in a search for John.

Gets easier with a place of birth as you can eliminate the surname from the search altogether.

1901 census: RG13; Piece: 932; Folio: 12; Page: 16
John HERRYETT (indexed as HERNYETT) aged 51 coachman & valet b.Kent, Greenwich
John is a live in servant, described as married but without Ann, working for a 76 year old clergyman. The clergyman has 'loss of brain power' written in the final column, and John also has something scribbled in this column but I can't work out what it is. Looks like Rdn?

Found Ann via son Charles, indexed as Herfel.
RG13; Piece: 923; Folio: 95; Pages 32/33
[looks like 36 Lewes Road]
Ann HERYET Head Mar 56 [dressmaker scored out for Charles so probably her occupation] b Sussex, Rottingdean
Charles J son 23 grocer's assistant b Brighton
Emily dau 19 dressmaker b Sussex Bevendean

1891 census: RG12; Piece: 815; Folio 97; Page 32
John was with the same clergyman (indexed as Herget)

Haven't yet found George Laurence but will work on it

The 'Heryet' name sounds French

I'll be very surprised if it isn't simply a variant of Heriot.

Found Laurence in 1891 by putting in birth of anyone born 1876 in Godmersham. Indexed as Herget. Don't know why it didn't come up on a Her* search
