On Brighton censuses from 1851 onwards my g.grandadx2 was born in Brighton. I've searched the 1841 census, all counties ,etc but cannot find one Joseph Pitches Flaxman that lived anywhere. He was born about 1823 so he would have been round about 18 yrs old can anyone help|bowdown| please. Thank you

Ha!

Have you considered the following:

1841, HO 107/1047/4 page 8
It shows a Joseph Flaxman, aged 25 (remember that ages were rounded) living in Long Lane, Bermondsey, Surrey. Okay, it says that he was born in the county but we know how accurate these records can be ;)

Now, with him was a Matilda Flaxman, aged 30.

In 1851, he was with Alice, but this hadn't been that long as the oldest child was only 5.

In 1841, he was a warehouseman and in 1851, a porter - very similar...

Also, there is a death for a Matilda Flaxman (Bermondsey, 1846, Oct to Dec, Vol 4, page 15)

Maybe the eldest child in 1851 was Matilda's and she died in childbirth? 1851 only says that it (sorry, have forgotten if boy or girl...) was the child of Joseph - not a relationship with Alice!

Also, note that Alice was born (according to 1851) Middlesex, London, which can cover any part of London from my reckoning and he was up there about the right time.

Well, what do you reckon? Certificates will tell...

Marriage: April to June 1840, Lambeth, Vol 4, page 288, Joseph Flaxman & Matilda Burrows

Bummocks! Just found a marriage of Joseph Flexman to Alice Elizabeth Wilen, Brighton, 1845, April to June, Vol 7, page 391. So that's THAT theory blown out of the water. Sorry!
