Please does anyone have ready access to the parish registers for Aldenham?

I am looking for a marriage between John HOLLOWAY and his wife, Mary. Their first child was born in 1827, so I am assuming the marriage would have probably been c.1826. Apart from the date, I'm keen to know Mary's maiden name.

Many thanks!

Hello Linda,

Have you had any reply to this? If not, I am hoping to get to HALS either this week or next and can look up the marriage for you. My husband's family came from Aldenham which is why your post caught my eye! They were very considerate - moved from Bushey to Aldenham in the 1770's and stayed there for the next two hundred years.......

Gill

Hi Gill

No, no replies yet! Would really appreciate your help - providing it is information you can find relatively quickly. We'd hate you to spend hours trawling microfilm for us when you no doubt have loads of stuff to look up for yourself. |hug|

My cousin and I are that point where we have only a very limited amount of information that we need from the parish records. We both live a reasonable distance from Hertfordshire and it's hardly worth the effort of making a visit - but without a visit we can't move ahead!!

Many thanks for your offer.

With best wishes,

Linda (and Tim)

Hi Linda,

It's no problem - I need to go through the Aldenham registers again anyway trying to spot a few strays who seem to have eluded me the last time I visited :-)

If you let me have the details of any other people that you need, I'll keep an eye for them as well. I'm hoping to go tomorrow afternoon as long as I get the Christmas shopping finished in time, if not it will be next week (HALS has late night opening on Thurs).

Regards
Gill

Hi Linda,

Well I finally got to HALS today and had a look for your John Holloway in the Aldenham registers. Unfortunately I couldn’t find him so I had a look at the Allen index just in case he and Mary had married in a neighbouring parish. The only likely marriage was that of John Holloway and Mary Hales in South Mimms. I found some other Holloway marriages in Aldenham who could be John’s siblings. Anyway, these are the details that I found:-

St Giles, South Mimms
John Holloway of the Parish of North Mimms, Bachelor and Mary Hales of South Mimms, Spinster were married by licence with consent of William Hales the natural and lawful father of the bride this 12th of May 1820. John made his mark, Mary signed her name. Witnesses: William Hales jnr and Rebecca Hales (X)

Aldenham Baptisms
1788 Aug 31 William s/o Henry & Susanna Holloway of Kings Langley, born Aug 12
1790 May 23 Sarah d/o Henry & Susanna Holloway, born Apr 22
1792 Mar 26 Henry s/o Henry & Susanna Holloway, born Mar 6
1794 Apr 12 Robert s/o Henry & Susanna Holloway, born Mar 18
1796 May 1 John s/o Henry & Susanna Holloway, born Apr 4
1798 Apr 1 Susanna d/o Henry & Susanna Holloway, born Feb 26
1825 Aug 28 James s/o Henry & Mary Holloway, High Cross, Labourer, Born Jan 6
1827 Jul 15 Henry s/o Henry & Mary Holloway, High Cross, Labourer
1827 Sep 16 George s/o William & Sarah Holloway, High Cross, Baker

Aldenham Marriages (from Allen index)
1808 Feb 3 Henry Holloway (W) & Ann Meadham (W) both of Aldenham
Witnesses: Thomas Dickinson & William Nicholls

1811 Feb 6 Joseph Fletcher (B) & Sarah Holloway (S) both of Aldenham
Witnesses; Ellenor Broughall, William Fletcher & William Nicholls

1812 Aug 25 William Holloway (B) & Sarah Evans (S) both of Aldenham
Witnesses: Mary Bull & William Nicholas (could be Nicholls)

1823 Feb 6 Robert Holloway (B) & Mary Sharpe (S) both of Aldenham

I know that John and Mary's marriage is earlier than you originally thought, but John would have been 23/24 in 1820 so it is possible. Maybe they had children baptised in South Mimms between 1820 and 1827 but I'm afraid I ran out of time to look today.

Hope this helps.

Merry Christmas
Gill

Gill, thank you so much! You must have spent ages looking for that lot. We really appreciate your help, especially at this busy time of year! Not sure how you found the time to go digging up roots the week before Christmas!!

Yes, the marriage is rather earlier than we thought. I wonder if the John and Mary that you have found really is our couple? Aldenham and South Mimms are not a million miles away, and Holloway isn't all that common a name - but I'm intrigued that that you didn't come across the baptisms of any of John and Mary's children in Aldenham....

According to the various censuses, John and Mary had eleven children between 1827 and 1846. I wouldn't have thought they'd have had many more, if any, prior to this. The censuses all clearly state Aldenham as the children's place of birth.

It looks as though we have more work to do in the New Year - but thanks so much for the kick-start!
