Harry was having a problem posting this, so I agreed to do it for him.

My grandfather, Arthur Garrett said to be born Paddington on 5 January 1868. He was a pauper in Paddington Workhouse. He was admitted to the Ashford School directly from Paddington Workhouse on 18 November 1875.

At the age of 6 years he was stated to be chargeable to Paddington. There were other children in the family who were not named. In the remarks column of the register it says "Mother in Prison" (but no name given).

The next entry in the register shows his discharge from the West London School to the Training Ship Exmouth on 4 January 1881. Here the remarks column has "Mother in Prison, supposed to have gone".

The Board of Guardians Register of children chargeable to Paddington shows that Arthur Garrett was at West London School District at Ashford in Middlesex for four years before going to Exmouth.

In the Admission and Discharge Register for July 1870 to Nov 1872 of St Pancras Workhouse Workhouse lists a Henry Garrett, married, aged 39 years and living at 22! Euston Street, and Isabella Garrett, married, aged 30 years, living in the same address, with a 9 month old infant (William) housed in the Nursery with Isabella.

The three were discharged on April 1872 at own request. I am trying to establish if these two were Arthur Garrett's actual parents. If the woman "In Prison" was called Isabella I seem to have solved part of the "brick wall"; finding the "other children in the family who were not named" gives me a jack-pot. Any help is greatly appreciated. Harry Garrett

Not much help I expect, but Arthur is listed as a pauper and scholar, residing at the "Exmouth" Training Ship on the 1881 census. At least it confirms he was still there I suppose.

I will have a further nose around later if I get a chance.

Thank you Mark for your reply. If I can locate the court summons that were held at the Old Bailey during the 1880 period it would help immensely as I seem to recall one instance were a Garrett was tried and sentenced; and I believe she was a female!! Harry Garrett
