View Full Version : Britain's Last Tommies by Richard Van Emden

Britain's Last Tommies by Richard Van Emden is the title of the book which I have just received fom Carolyn of Ancestors magazine.
This book has been signed by the author and as promised, I am giving it away as a prize.
To win the book, all you have to do is to come up with the best phrase to promote Brit-Gen which I can use in advertising our forum throughout the world.
If you list your ideas, I will then gather them up, set up a vote (hopefully with help from Sue Mackay!) and all the members of the forum can choose the one they like best.
[Edit] I forgot to mention that you are not restricted to just one attempt - the more the merrier. Somehow, although we know it is, we have to convey to the world that ours is the best, the most useful and friendliest forum on the Internet.
[Edit] All suggestions will be taken in date order. I thought if it was posted on the open forum then everything can be seen to be honest and above board.

Your Ancestors need YOU
Done as a pastiche of the WW1 Kitchener poster....
Mark
(yeah, its corny, but it is the middle of the afternoon and I can't think of anything...)
Edit: Just had this thought of Frank dressed as Kitchener, complete with huge moustache and Pam as Britannia slipped in to the background for good measure ;) I shall leave the idea for our photoshoppers to play with!
Extra edit: Just been reading some reviews about this book - it really does seem to be a fantastic book and a brilliant prize!

Oh Mark, nice try but it doesn't say why people will find Brit-Gen useful, does it?
Brit-Gen needs a nice, catchy advertising jingle to enable us to stand out from the crowd. I can add this to all the brochures and advertising, and our membership numbers will go through the roof!

When Rod Neep set up British-Genealogy.com he used the phrase "To help you trace your British family history".
Rod made the point that the intention was "Not just to find ancestors and build a family tree, but to put meat on the bones with information about where they lived, how they lived their lives, information about their occupations, and what influenced their thinking and decision making." That's very much what the Forum does today, and it's going to be hard to find a better phrase to encapsulate it in just a few words.
However, there is one other factor that makes this Forim what it is - its friendliness.
So how about adapting what we already have to say "Friendly help to trace your family history"

Hi Pam,
All suggestions will be taken in date order. I thought if it was posted on the open forum then everything can be seen to be honest and above board.
OK. In that case ignore my PM, :) .
"B-G Forums - first stop on the road to your ancestors."
And you could do a take on a road sign with it saying 'Your ancestors' instead of 'The North' or 'Truro'.
The alternative is to sort-of copy the steam train adverts of years ago which used to be-deck every station, and say "B-G Forums - on the track to your ancestors", and then have a poster with a steam train in it. (But a painting of a steam train, rather than a photo.)

These are great ideas so keep them coming.
Just to give you some inspiration, try and think what phrase would really grab your attention and make you want to visit Brit-Gen. It is likely to be included on the banner across the forum, so you will have to live with it for a long time.
You have a week so there is plenty of time to get those little grey cells working. I would like to help you out, but all my grey cells died out years ago!
Oh yes, for those that have asked; the book is a hard back, brand new and signed by the author. It does look like a cracking read.

Brit-Gen needs a nice, catchy advertising jingle to enable us to stand out from the crowd. I can add this to all the brochures and advertising, and our membership numbers will go through the roof!
Just out of curiosity I have noticed the number of new members and some say - "Found this site by accident" or similar words to that effect. Where did they find us?
Will the jingle be one that you would wish to be picked up by Google or a search engine, if so are there any specific words that should be included?

Hi Mutley,
There is a link to Brit-Gen on the front page of Parish Chest. I have also been listing the site with different web sites and search engines to boost the ranking.
We are having a new brochure for Parish Chest being prepared for next season. The brochure will also include information about Brit-Gen and I wanted an easily remembered, catchy phrase to promote our forum.
When Brit-Gen is re-vamped, I want the phrase included in the banner which will go on the top of the front page of the forum and the free pages. The same phrase will also be included in the magazine ads.
Parish Chest is also having a large stand at the WDYTYA Show at Olympia next year and Brit-Gen will be heavily advertised on the same stand.
I have been racking my brains to try and think of a catchy phrase. The web people have come up with some ideas but I wasn't keen on them. Then I thought, as you all use the forum, why not ask you. After all, the forum is ours, isn't it? Who else would know what to say better than the people who use Brit-Gen.
I probably haven't explained myself very well, but I hope you can understand what I am trying to get at.
I am bursting with pride at the way you all pitch in to try and help people. I love the friendliness, knowledge, the camaraderie and the fun. I need a phrase that encompasses all of that.

Following on from Mutley, there does seem to be a difference between the original idea for brochures etc and an Internet search. Does "B-G Forums sponsored by Parish Chest Ltd" give the ideal indication of what the Forum is all about? If the "motto" is to be used on the 'net perhaps it needs a little extra to draw people in. Just a thought.

Oh dear, I think I may have caused confusion.
The phrase I am looking for is just for advertising in the brochures, magazines and across the Brit-Gen banners, etc. It is not for the search engines.
Picture a folded, informational brochure, 3 inches wide x 8½ inches high. On the front page is the Parish Chest logo and contact details. The first inside page tells you all about the shop and what you can purchase. The second inside page tells you all about Brit-Gen - the free information pages and forum, etc. This is the page that needs a catchy phrase. This 'jingle' will be used in all of the advertising, so it needs to be 'in your face' and hard to forget.
Forget search engines, keywords and meta tags as that is the techies job.
Yes, I know. It is as clear as mud!

If the thread looks as if it is sliding down the page, I am sure someone can give it a nudge.
As regards the jingle; you can see how much space is across the top of the forum, although the new banner will fit right the way across. Included on that banner will be the Parish Chest logo, probably on the far right, and maybe a picture or two - undecided on the pictures at the moment.
The current jingle says, 'To help you trace your British family history.' I just do not feel that conveys what this forum is all about, do you? Yes, you all help with research, but BG is much more than just another forum. It is like one big family, all pulling together and helping one and other, and somehow, I want to express this.
Look folks, I never said this was going to be easy but it is OUR forum, we are proud of it and the help which is so readily given to other researchers. The only question is, how do we convey all of that in more or less, one sentence?
