Edward Andrew Opie, batchelor, artist of Paris St.( father Richard also artist) married 1858 Mary Jane Devonshire, spinster of Nosworhy Row, (father John, builder)District Exeter; Parish: Church of St Sidwell in the county of City Of Exeter. I found this in my mother-in-law's research on the Opie family; not sure where she found this and how accurate. Where to to find info on Richard?

That marriage date is supposed to be 1838 - as there is a tree online that has them having children from abt 1839. By 1843 they were in Tasmania, Australia as you probably know, then South Australia. That tree does not know where they originated from.

There is a marriage on FreeBMD that shows a marriage in the Sept quarter 1838 for Mary Jane Devonshire, in Exeter district, but Opie does not appear among the men on the page - but you could check the GRO index images to find him.

However, this passenger list shows them quite clearly arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1839, no children.
Edward Andrew OPIE, wife Mary Jane nee DEVONSHIRE [2,7,9];

There appears to be other Opie and Devonshire people who may be related also on aboard.

Do you want the birth regs for their children?

Dear Christine, How careless of me! That will teach me to proof read what I've typed! Aren't you clever! to have found so much so soon. I really appreciate your help! We knew that there was another Devonshire on board the ship but no one in the family mentioned another Opie! I have seen a couple of trees online, but they seem to stop a Edward Andrew, although on does have hin with a father named Francis, but I'm not sure of the accuracy of that because it appears that census records were used & I can only find census records going back to 1840, & these Opies had left England by then. I would love to have the birth regs for the children. One small question what does the bracketed numbers mean at the end of the passengers names. Once again thanks soooo very much.

The numbers in brackets will relate to something to do with the shipping record sources - I have no exact idea. There should be more info on the web site. I found the site by googling your Opie's full name within quotation marks.

Also, very soon there is going to be an Artists biography source on line - his name came up there, but I couldn't get into the site as it isn't open yet - Spring 2007. There is a link where you can register your interest to be told when access is available. (This came up in googling his name as before).

I will check the cds, SA, Vic and Tasmania - back later.

Thought I should start a new thread in the Australia forum for the kids, done South Australia, including three marriages for a son that I haven't got the birth of yet.

I have found this message by chance. Mary Jane & Edward Andrew Opie came to Adelaide with HER brother Charles Devonshire & his wife Elizabeth nee Rashleigh my Great Great Great Grandfather in ?1841. My son Nigel married Lisa Opie in 1999.
An aunt has had some infomation about the Opie`s but we have a pretty cold trail.
A another distant Devonshire Rear-Admiral Sir John Ferris Devonshire d 19/2/1839
at Alvington House Stonehouse ? Devon.
I would love to explore all of these threads.

Hi CJC42,
Several members of the Devonshire family emigrated to Australia along with Charles and his family; sisters Elizabeth, Ann, and husbands and Mary Jane who married Edward Opie, on the D'Auvergne, arriving in Adelaide in about March 1839.
I have just started reading a book "The Devonshires From Cornwall" by Pamela R Chismon, who has done a lot of research. I believe she still has copies if you are interested in buying a copy
