Hi I am Caroline from flintshire wales born in wallasey cheshire and am 62 years old
looking for my grandmother JENNIE MCFARLANE born 1897. I have her marriage cert and death cert. her husband JOHN JASPER DANN has been easy to trace but apart from knowing her father JAMES MCFARLANE was a boatswain and died before her marriage in 1917 I can find no trace of her birth or where she was born. have searched everywhere in bmd and 1901 census she was born and married in seacombe cum poulton birkenhead cheshire parish of st pauls. if anyone has any ideas where else i could look i would be grateful. it's driving me mad.

Hi ,
When I first read your thread I thought your grandmother sounded Scottish, have you considered that?
This entry on 1901 census could be her:-
6 St Matthew St , Dundee.
Isabella McFarlane Grandmother 67 born Dunkeld Perthshire
Jane Mcfarlane Head 39 born Letham, Forfarshire
John son 19 Ship yard lab born Kirriemuir Forfarshire
Bella Jane dau 17 Linen weaver born Kirriemuir
Charles son 14 Engine Fitter born Kirriemuir
Jennie dau 5 born Kirriemuir.

JeremyGood thought, Jeremy.
Wouldn't you know it? The 1891 census doesn't provide a father's name. Jane Ann McFarlane is there with mother Isabella and children John, Bella Jane and Charles. Both Jane and Isabella are Factory Workers (Weaver and Warper, respectively). Reference: Parish: Forfar; ED: 1; Line: 2; Year: 1891.
Same for the 1881 census: Jane A. McFarlane with mother Isabella, both Linen Weavers. Reference: Parish: Kirriemuir; ED: 12; Line: 17; Year: 1881.
I wonder if Jane's father's name may have been John but I can't find them on the 1871 census to check it out.

Did you mean to put that she was married & died in Seacombe, rather than born & married in Seacombe? Are there any other family members in the same grave or is she in a public grave? Do you know the names of any other of her relatives?
Good thought, Jeremy.

What is very interesting here is that I have found Isabella Mcfarlane in 1871, a linen factory worker age 37 living with her 80 year old father John Mcfarlane. they are living at 2 Bell Place, Forfar.
The 9 year old daughter, Jane A Mcfarlane is a servant in Caputh Pershire. Also a servant in the household is James Ballantine aged 19 an assisstant Ferryman.
Considering that Isabella, Jane and Jennie are all named Mcfarlane (Grandmother, mother & daughter) I suggest that Isabella and Jane weren't married and it is possible that
James Ballantine is the father of Jane's children.

Not necessarily. Married women in Scotland often retained their maiden name.

Hi Wirral,
Yes I know that sometimes happened in Scotland but it is claimed Jennie's father was James Mcfarlane on the marriage certificate and yet the Jane, Isabella and Isabella's father John were always Mcfarlane on the censuses (female line) and there was never a husband with either Isabella or Jane on any census which suggests to me they never had one.

Jeremys suggestion does sound quite likely to me. Unmarried girl, uses the father of the childs real first name and then her family surname.
I have a case of that exact thing in my tree. Even stranger that the pretence was kept up - even after the death of the father. On the daughters marriage certificate the fathers name is still the "made up" one(with him listed as deceased) - despite his passing away a couple of years before.

I want to thank you all for your interest in Jennie and your help and advice, have looked up your suggestion regarding Jane and Isabella it does seem a likely idea. there seems to be no husband for either in their history. Maybe she came to seacombe as a servant or to live with relations. there were quite a few mcfarlanes living a few streets away, a Peter Robertson Mcfarlane with his family. Duncan\David Mcfarlane wife Isabella Mcfarlane, with a son james only 4 in 1891 both familys hailing from scotland Dundee and Dumfries so I will try to follow those leads. your ideas will always be appreciated
