Hi
Not sure if I'm doing this right, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I started researching about a year ago, initially at the urging of my sister-in-law, who was trying to trace her dad's family and in particular, her great-uncle, Jimmy Swan who came to prominence in driving the Flying Scotsman in a record-breaking run. Her dad, who was also Jimmy Swan, was born in Edinburgh in 1902. His father, William Sinclair Swan was Jimmy's brother (the train driver) but I have failed to track down anything before the 1902 birth certificate. William was married to Jessie Meldrum. Any tips please?
Trying to track the Scottish in-laws set me to look in my own Scottish background and this was fairly succesful, right back to my great-grandfather John Douglas, who was born on 28.12.1840 to Robert Douglas and Jean Halley. Efforts to go beyond this have so far hiot a brick wall and I'm not sure how you progress before the 1841 census.
