Hi everyone. |wave|
I first got into researching my family while looking for my father’s uncle, who, according to family history, went down on the Titanic. I am 95% sure I have tracked him down as George Richard Evans, thanks mostly to the help from the guys on the encyclopedia-titanica forums. He was a first-class steward, having previously worked on the Olympic. His body was not recovered. I was told by someone that people lost at sea weren’t given death certificates. Is that correct?
I have since managed to find quite a lot of past family and am delighted to have found this forum to hopefully have some of my many queries answered.
Regards, Anne
Hello Anne.
Welcome to B-G and good luck.
Seeing that you are in Sth Africa I thought I could ask you about this place.
Where is SHABANI in your country.
Some time ago I was trying to make contact with someone linked to the SHONE family.
I'm not related to them. Just wanted some info re a SHONE person I met in 1945-46. He was an officer in the RAF.

Have you looked at the Marine Deaths Index? It is separate from the usual General Register Office (GRO) Index for England & Wales.
With an name like EVANS you might be interested in this link to the Scottie Press in Liverpool http://www.scottiepress.org/projects/welsh.htm

I think Shabani is in Zimbabwe. Sorry, can't help there. :(

A lot of my family came from Liverpool, with Welsh names like Evans and Hughes, so I will definitely find this interesting. Thanks. :)

Hi, and welcome. My ancestors went to South Africa in the 1820s but came back in the 1930s - I now live in Wales, where Evans and Hughes are even more common :D
I see that George Evans was 32 when he went down on the Titanic. Do you know who his parents were and have you found him in the 1881/1891/1901 census returns? The only George Evans who comes up immediately on the 1881 index as being born in Liverpool in 1880 was the son of William and Emma and living in Toxteth Park. Does this sound like the right one?
Book some good weather for me in late February/early March - I am coming your way!

Hi Sue. I have found him on the 1891 census. He was born in 1884, so he was only 6 then. I can't find him on the 1901 census, although his parents and brother are there. Maybe he's already gone to sea? His parents were George and Sarah. George was actually 27, I think, when he died, but he must have signed on to the Titanic using a false age. Dunno why! There is a possibility that he was married, so I've ordered what could be his marriage certificate to see if it is him. Still waiting for it, though.
Weather should be good in Feb/March - but hot! At least it is on the highveld.
Thanks for the welcome, Bo Peek.
Regards, Anne.
