I was passing the local war memorial today and wonder why my grandmothers brother was mentioned but my grandfathers brothers were not. They all lived local in the same street and all died in ww1.Does any one know the criteria used in deciding the names on these memorials.Thankyou

Hello Mike,
It may be that the "powers that be" did not have a record of your grandfather's brothers service and the fact that they had lost their lives.
There are war memorials that are being added to all the time. The larger towns appear to be the worst culprits - the villages knew their men personally.
Try writing to the Town Clerk outlining the circumstances relating to your great uncles. It may be that their records were not known or that they are commemorated elsewhere, in which case, the Town Clerk may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Mike,
As Jan has already said, missing names are not unusual.

Though if they've got to add 310 names to Boston's memorial, they'll probably need another actual memorial.

Here in Australia, it was a matter of application by the family to have the name placed on the proposed memorials. We are lucky enough to have images of these application forms online through our national archives. The family nominated which town memorial that they wanted the name to appear on.
