My Name is Colin Hester, I am tracing the family name and am currently stuck with a John Hester who was living in ReaDING in 1851, John is shown on the 181 Census living with his family and Mother Sarah who was born in Princess Risborugh, John's father was called Wiliam, he was a builder, I can find nothin g out about Sarah or William, or in fact the birth of John.
Also I am researching a William Storey who would have been born around 1860.I have my grandfathers birth cert, he was born in Wales he was also called William, however the Census for William Senior shows that he as born in Bridgewater Somerset, The only one I can find is for William Storey born Nth Petherton in 1862, but again unable to get back any further.

Any info on either of the above would be welcombed.

Thanks

Hi Colin,
A marriage of William Hester & Sarah Spiers took place at Aylesbury St Mary 28th Dec 1809. Aylesbury is reasonably close to Princess Risborough.

According to census John was born 1805 but the marriage may have taken place after his birth or Sarah was a second wife and not John's real mother. Worth keeping it on record.

Hi Jeremy

Do you know when Sarah was born or do you have any info on the birth of John in 1805 as I cannot find any records recording this

Hi Colin,
Sarah Hester the mother is actually 90 in 1851 (not 60 as indexed) This leads to an interesting entry on 1841 census:-
St Lawrence Reading
William Hester 36 Bricklayer
Ann 35
Emma 15
Elizabeth 13
Debuck?11
Rhoda7
Ann 6
Selina 2
William 1mth
Sarah Hester 77

All born in county except Sarah & Elizabeth.

Now compare this with your family in 1851
St Giles Reading
John Hester 46
Ann wife 43
Emma Ann dau 24
Ann dau 15
William John son 9
Chas Edwin son 6
Thomas Pinnell nephew 6
Sarah Hester Mother widow 90

A Selina Hester is registered dead in Reading 1846. I would say this is the same family and John is probably also known as William.
This death registered in Reading suggests that:-
John William Hester Apr/Jun 1855 vol 2c Page 235

Incidentally how do you know that John's father was William, a death recorded for John in Reading 1840 looks interesting?

Hi Jeremy

I repied direct from my mail box so I do not know if you have recied the message, but yes this is the correct family, but I can not find any birth for John around 1805, do you have any info on this, also William his father was a Master Builder so I can only presume at this stage that the John who died in 1840 was oerhaps his father(by the same name). The strange thing is that John was a bulder but the 1851 Census and his death cert show him as a guard on the GW railway.I got the info for Johns father from the death Cert for Sarah who died in 1859.

Hi Colin,
I'm afraid I haven't received a private message from you. I assume you agree that William (1841) & John (1851) is the same man? I have found the two daughters Deborah & Rhoda on the 1851 census, do you need that information?

This is interesting:- Marianne Hester daughter of William & Sarah Hester baptised 15 Dec 1841 at Reading St Giles age 33. (It is likely in this case John/William was not baptised as an infant either)
Another interesting baptism is Eliza daughter of William & Elizabeth Hester at Reading St Mary 3 Nov 1807. It may be a total red-herring but it would also tie up with my theory Sarah was a second wife, ie the marriage of William Hester & Sarah Spiers in 1809.

In reference to John being a Railway Guard in 1851. That would not unduly concern me, railways were beginning to become an important mode of transport in 1840's and a career change from a bricklayer to a railway guard would be quite likely.

If you send mail direct to the Brit-Gen forum, then it will come to me rather than your intended recipient. Your message follows:-

Hi jeremy
yes this is definatly the correct family but I can find no record of Johns birth around 1805, the strange thing is that on the 1851 census return he is shown as a guard on the GW railway, he died in 1855, so the 1840 death I can only presume is the death of his father (William). Would you have any details on Johns birth please.
Thanks
Colin
