Hi there,

My name is Fiona, just joined today. I have just started to research my family history, with my partner's help. We are finding it difficult as no-one in my family is forthcoming with information and we can't even get back as far as the 1901 census.

At the moment, I am looking for any information on the sinking of the SS Scillin on 14th Noveber 1942, as it seems my grandfather, John Robinson Wilson, was on this ship. The pages on t'internet have given conflicting details and I am very confused at the moment.

Any help, info or hints would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Fiona

Look at it this way - you won't suffer from misleading information. Just work from basics - simply work back starting from your own birth certificate getting marriage and birth certificates for each generation in turn.

I presume this is the John Robinson Wilson, listed on the CWGC website -

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2769679

It lists his wife as Sarah A Wilson of South Shields as well as his age and regiment details.

It seems from what I have read that the Scillin was an Italian ship carrying Allied POWs which was sunk by a British submarine (P212)

Indeed. If Fiona searches this site with a keyword of Scillin, she'll find another thread discussing it.

For what it's worth, there's a birth record for a John Robinson Wilson in the 2nd quarter of 1908 in South Shields, Durham, Tyne and Wear. [Ref. Volume 10a Page 1012].

[It should be noted that FreeBMD has birth records for five John Robinson Wilsons between 1887 and 1908 in Durham and Northumberland.]

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read my post and reply. I've never joined any kind of internet group and I was really nervous! No idea why lol. I've been able to speak to my aunt, who has given me a few more starting points so hopefully things should go a bit better now.

Thanks again
