I have found a potential lead for one of my relatives. I have the sign up form which states the name age and address (all which match the person I am looking for) and it gives his regiment number. how can I find out more about what happened to him using the reg number?
cheers

Where to look or obtain information and what is available depends on when he served.

Could you give us any dates that apepar on the form.

It may also help if you tell us how you got hold of the "sign up form" (attestation?). This has a bearing on what we might suggest as a next step.

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
from Ancestry UK

Details include:
Name: George Branton
age 33
residence: 172 Northport St Hoxton
Regiment name: The King's Royal Rifles
Regiment number 18225

That is all that it really had. Interestingly when doing a similar search on another relative it had the actual docuentation, dates, question/answers, signatures and all that - but not with the George Branton. his "view document" seemed to be just the cover sheet (with a different reg number I might add...it was 13225 not 18225).

I just wanted to know where I can go from here- please dont say Kew because the taxi fare is too $$ from South Australia! :o)

Do I take it that this is a pension record
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/166.htm

His medal card is on
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Also on this site are regimental war diaries, which don't often mention individuals, but you may get an insight as to where he was and what his unit was doing.

The regiments web-site
http://www.regiments.org/
is good for general information.

You might try a search to see if he is mentionedin the National Roll of the Great War - it is not complete but you might find something. It is available on pay-per-view sites such as 'find my past'.

British Army Records are listed on this TNA research guide
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#b
to view the actual surviving records you will need a cheap-day return to Kew.

Hi Geoffers, Have checked out those sites, but the records I want are not there it is the years 1858-1878, and those sites only seem to cover ww1 & ww2, not only that each time I put my name in I come up with the minister for information Brendan Bracken's papers(is related, so I believe)

I was responding to the person who originally created this thread and began typing my response before you had added your query, but didn't post my reply until after you - so I never saw your question. It would probably have been best if you had started a fresh thread in order to avoid confusion.

To respond to your question:

His service record should be held by The National Archives at Kew. Have a browse of these research guides to find out what to look for when you get there
