Hi There

Would anyone have any information on the Workhouse in Brighton. Information as to where it was whether or not it was also a hospital and where one would begin locating available records.

Looking for Alfred Sweatman who died there in 1875.

Desperately needing enlightenment.

Hi Chrissy - the following site may help you.

http://www.fourbears.worldonline.co.uk/index.html

Go to that site and then click on the Poor Law button and it gives a list of where workhouse records are kept.

I can't help much except to advise that I do have a Death Certificate fro a relative of mine who died in said Workhouse in 1896. The only information I can give is that at that time the Master is shown as a Valentine Burden.

Richard

hi,
I am looking for the birth of my great grandfather, Edwin Rees, who was 5 weeks old and living in Brighton workhouse at the time of the 1841 Census. I cannot find any records that exist from this time and would like to find out more about him! His mother was Mary Ann Rees (born c1821)and he had an older brother, David Rees (b c1838). I cannot find his father David Rees in the workhouse in the 1841 Census and am wondering if he had died and that is why they ended up in the workhouse. David had certaily died before Edwin's marriage in 1870.
Any help gratefully received!
Sue

Can you locate a birth in the GRO index? Do remember to try variant spellings.

Check parish registers for baptisms if you cannot locate a birth.

The workhouses web-site (http://www.workhouses.org.uk/) (type Brighton into the site search engine) seems to indicate that no records exist from this period, but it might be worth giving the East Sussex Record Office a call for local adivce.

Hi Chrissy,

The workhouse I expect you're looking for is now Brighton General Hospital in Elm Grove Brighton if you have a look at this http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Brighton/Brighton.shtml it will give you a lot of info.
