The WWII Army Roll of Honour CD records him as being born in Preston and his residence as Preston.

Hi there,
Well, I've found him :)
Whitehaven District, Jan to Mar, 1924. Definitely the mother's maiden name is Anderson.
However, the page is rather smudged :( and the entry is difficult to read.
I think that it says Vol 19b, page 1238, but you should get a second opinion before ordering the certificate based on this information.

i think you are correct Jan. However it may pay to get the GRO to check the entry when ordering to be on the safe side. It is difficult to read.

I had a look at the Commonwealth War Graves site and the citation says that his parents were in Penwortham, Lancashire. This is just outside Preston (according to the other half whose family come from "oop north" :D)
