William WILLIAMS is my worst brickwall. He married Grace Luke from Parkham, Devon in St Andrew's Church in Plymouth on 3 April 1809.
They had 4 children :-

John Luke WILLIAMS, born in Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon was baptised on 31 January 1813 in St Andrew's, Plymouth, Devon.

Thomas Macey WILLIAMS, was baptised on 10 March 1816 in St Andrew's, Plymouth, Devon. He died and was buried on 4 May 1818 in St Andrew's, Plymouth, Devon.

Ellen WILLIAMS, daughter of William WILLIAMS and Grace LUKE, was born on 27 August 1820 in Plymouth, Devon. She was baptised on 29 October 1820 in Independent Church, Paignton, Devon.

Thomas Macey WILLIAMS, son of William WILLIAMS and Grace LUKE, was born on 19 December 1822 in Paignton, Devon. He was christened on 2 November 1823 in Independent Church, Paignton, Devon. He was a Shipwright.

William Williams was a cordwainer, he was missing from the census in 1841, Grace was living with Ellen and Thomas Macey in Plymouth

The name of MACEY runs through the family for several generations and the online parish clerk for Parkham could find no link to the Luke family in Parkham, so it looks as though it may be from the Williams side. William could have come from Cornwall or Devon and why did they go to Paignton and then in the 1841 census the family of Grace, Ellen and Luke turn up in Plymouth again.

If anyone has any thoughts, i'd like to hear them as I don't know where to look next.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of William WILLIAMS baptised in Cornwall and several around the Devon/Cornwall border. I will happily search my database for you but findings may confuse rather than help.

Thank you for the offer Bo Peep. A cousin of mine thought that the Williams family had connections with the Maker/Rame area. William and Grace had 4 children one was named John Luke after Grace's father, there is a daughter called Ellen and they had two sons named Thomas Macey Williams. Thomas is the name that has carried the Macey connection through the generations. It could be that William's father was Thomas who married a "Macey"

Any help will be appreciated.

So, when would you estimate William WILLIAMS to have been baptised?

Grace Luke was born in 1787, they were married in 1809, so I think that William was possibly born in the 1780's.

Not a Thomas to be seen nor a trace of the name of MACEY. These are the only chaps in the ten year span (1780-1790) that were baptised near the Devon/Cornwall border.

Saltash
William WILLIAMS son of William & Charity, 02nd. February, 1781.
Morwenstow
William WILLIAMS son of William & Susanna, 20th. January, 1782
Stoke Climsland
William WILLIAMS son of John & Elizabeth, 16th. February, 1783. Father - Labourer
William WILLIAMS son of John & Elizabeth, 15th. October, 1786. Father - Pauper Labourer.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thank you Bo Peep, i'll try and find out the maiden names of the mothers.

I'm also on the track of baptisms for Peter Tavy, I recently purched a CD from Dartmoor Press but the data for the period I am interested in was missing. There does not seem to be an OPC for that village either.
