One of my ancestors was a John Eve, of Chesterton in Cambridge. A distant, newly found relative has discovered that John was transported to America for 7 years back in 1756. How on earth might I find out what he had done to deserve this, given that I can't get to Cambridge? Any ideas please? (I'm damn annoyed because I lived in Chesterton for 5 years up until a couple of years ago and was then oblivious to my family having come from there!!).

Just for the fun of it, to speculate, what might he have done? I guess it couldn''t have been too serious or he would have been hanged rather than deported!

Have you tried The Times online. It often had listings of those transported and also some court cases.

You can join online if you are abroad at
http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/cgi-bin/vlib.sh

or visit a local library if you are in the UK.

The offence?
Possibly, caused a traffic jam along the high road herding his sheep;)

Lol thats what I thought!

I am in a village in Co Durham, the nearest library which gives Times access is Durham itself, flipping miles away (and no car, groan!). However, I will certainly go and have a look when I can get the monsters... sorry, children... looked after by my folks in the next school hols. thank you!

Do it online Spangle.

I joined Bedfordshire Library from Portugal and have found loads of snippets about my Black Sheep.

You see,
Bo Peep herded sheep, mine were thieves, vagabonds and ruffians. All depends where you were dragged up. |laugh1|

The National Archives has a research guide which explains the difficulties faced in finding out this information

It's been ages since I have had a look at the Eve side of my tree and apologies must go to you all for your kind help and my ignorance.

I had a look at The Old Bailey Archive... and this is what I found. Sadly it doesn't give any more detail but at I think this might well be my John Eve, as the year is exactly right. This is what I found :D
