I know that this is probably a stupid question but if a woman is widowed and subsequently remarries, does she use her birth surname on her new children's certs, or does she use her previous married name? I just want to make sure that I am sourcing the right way.
Thanks

Hi Vanessa,
My gran, born Louisa Goldsmith, divorced her first husband (Arthur Ottley) in 1927. She then married my grandfather (James Hart) in 1929.
My mum (Margaret Hart) was born in 1930 and, on her birth certificate, gran's maiden name of Goldsmith is shown.
Hope this helps,
Jan

I think you're right, then so am I. Thanks Jan
Hi,
Maiden name means just what it says, the name a girl is born with. This is the name she should put on the birth certificates of all subsequent children no matter how many times she has married. If she remarries she should use her married name but there is no written law to what anyone should call themselves so legally they put wharever they like!

If Jane Smith marries Mr Brown, is widowed and then marries Mr Jones, the birth certificates of her children should show the mother's name as "Jane Jones late Brown formerly Smith".
But what should happen doesn't always happen ;)

How true ! I have tried to follow the mind of a lady who was three times married, had children by all three husbands, and it is only by comparing birthdates with marriage dates that one can even guess the parentage. The first two husbands died young after two or three years, and she had 'posthumous' childen after the deaths in both cases, but on census they all have the same surname. Fortunately, the line I am tracing is from the third marriage when things seemed more regular. They did indeed put whatever they liked on many occasions.

Now comes my stupid question! |blush|
Which maiden name should be on the birth certificates of my grandchildren? My daughter was born SHAW, (my first marriage) but her surname was changed by Deed Poll, to GRANT-SALMON when she was 13 years old. I must ask her what she put ...... I never thought about it until now!

I believe I'm correct in stating that there is in law and in practice only one maiden name and that is the one that was registered at birth Subsequent Marriage and Death registrations are supposed to be treated as posted by Peter (not sure about Death Regitration) However one is permitted to call oneself any name that one wishes but watchout when you apply for your OAP if the paper trail is fuzzy!

Hi Diane,
Bit of a tricky one that but her actual maiden name is Shaw because that is the name she was born with and the name that will be on her birth certificate. She is allowed by law to change her name to anything she likes by deed poll or any other method but she will not be able to change her birth registration so her maiden name remains Shaw.

Thanks Jeremy ..... she did it wrong then, or her husband did! |doh|
I remember at her wedding, when she signed the register (Grant-Salmon), she had to show the vicar her birth certificate and a copy of the Deed Poll.
I tried to phone her, but she was out, so I dived in to have a look at the indexes ...... I ended up doing the lot whilst I was there, the results are amazing to say the least!
Both my grandchildrens' certs. give the maiden name as:
Grantsalmon
Grant-Salmon
The marriages though!
My marriage shows:
Shaw m. Grant-Salmon
Shaw m. Salmon (with an A at the end of the same ref. number as above)
As for my daughter's entries though ...... I'm speechless! The only name which isn't mentioned at all, is Shaw! |laugh1|
There are three entries for her marriage, all with the same ref number of course:
Grant-Salmon
Grant
Salmon
Talk about dotting the i's and crossing the t's! :D
