Hello all,
This is the first forum I've ever joined so I'm hoping to increase my computing skills as well as my family history knowledge. (It's just taken me a quater of an hour to work out out how to post this!).:o
In the not too distant past I've managed to research my LEICESTER MOULDING family. After a break of many years I've now returned to my researching, and I'm completely overwhelmed by the amount of info available on the internet.
I am currently searching for my GG grandfather FRED GIBSON b. aprox 1880 who married BEATRICE MAUD TRUSLOVE in LEIC in 1901. Legend has it Fred, a Royal Marine came from BALLACHULISH in scotland. But as yet I've not managed to find him prior to the 1901 Census. Together Fred & Beatrice had 14 children (have found 13 so far) and Beatrice was one of 22 children I've been told. So it looks like I shall be busy for the next few years!
Pleased to meet you all. Peapod.

Hi Peapod
Maybe he was stationed in Ballachulish, because the Fred Gibson that I found in the 1901 census was born in Leicestershire.
RG13/2105 folio 124 page 22, Royal Marine Barracks, East Stonehouse, Devon
Fred Gibson, private, single, 21, Navy man, Leicester, Spennyhills
Is this your man? Do you have the name of his father from his marriage certificate?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
Hi Wirral,
I believe he is my Fred Gibson. I have a copy of his marriage entry in the parish register: Fred Gibson 21 Bachelor Royal Marine Stonehouse Barracks
father: Joseph Arthur Gibson Labourer.
This week I found a Fred Gibson on the Leicester school exemption registers:
02 Sept 1892 Gibson Frederick age 13 address 9cc? Sanvy Gate.
My months free trial with Ancestry has expired, and I'm waiting for my b'day to be able to join again. But I was able to have a quick look on the 1891 census at my local history library hoping I'd find him at Sanvy (sanvey) Gate but no such luck.
Prior to this I did look him up on previous Census's but couldn't find a Fred Gibson with a father Joseph. So I'm a bit stumped.

Hi Peapod
I guess that the entry found by Wirral was actually Spinney Hills in Leicester.
In the 1881 census which you can see for yourself free of charge on this site http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true there is a family in Chapel Yard, Barlestone headed by Joseph Gibson with a son Joseph F Gibson aged 2 years. If this is possibly your family you might want to look it up for yourself. But if not I'll give you the details.
cheers

Further to Tony's message about the 1881 census, there is also an Arthur GIBSON, wife Ellen and children Abraham, John, Catherine and Frederick (aged 1), who is a 28 year old Labourer living at 73 Eaton Street on RG11/3165, folio 99, page 7. Could this be your Joseph Arthur???
Have just found Arthur on the 1891 census and I think this confirms that it is the correct family as they are living at Sanvy Gate - eureka!!
RG12/2535, folio 102, page 34
13 Sanvy Gate, Court C
Arthur GIBSON Head Mar 36 Bricklayers Labourer Whysendine Leicestershire
Ellen do Wife Mar 35 Shoe ? Maker Branstone Rutlandshire
Catherine do Daur S 13 Scholar Oakham do
Fred do Son S 11 do Leicester
The family are mistranscribed as GIBISON by Ancestry which wouldn't help you either!!
And here is Joseph Arthur GIBSON in the 1861 census of Whissendine:
RG9/2307, folio 79, page 12
Abraham GIBSON Head M 51 Agricultural Labourer Rutland Whissendine
Mary do Wife M 49 Labourers wife do Luffenham
Mary Ann do Daughter Um 13 Scholar do Whissendine
Eliza do do Um 12 do do do
Joseph Arthur do Son Um 8 do do do
According to Ancestry FreeBMD, Joseph Arthur GIBSON married Ellen KNAPP in December qtr 1873 at Melton Mowbray registration district, vol 7a, page 595.

WOW!! I can't believe how helpful you all are, thanks a lot :D
When I searched 1891 in Ancestry I had no idea how to search for street names, so I searched for GIBSON. Just shows you how careful you have to be.
I had previously found the 1881 Eaton Street family but when I mentioned it to my Dad (the font of what little knowledge there is on the Gibson's) he knew of no family connection with Rutland/Whissendine. BUT I spotted it because of Arthur and also Abraham. On Fred Gibson's marriage certificate one of the witnesses was an ABRAHAM Gibson!
I originally did some searches on Ancestry scottish census transcripts and didn't come up with any obvious hits for Fred in Ballachulish/Argyll. So I've had doubts about the connection from the start.
The question now is how do I prove the Whissendine Gibsons are the right family given that there is this family legend about Ballachulish? (Shame really, I quite fancied a trip to Scotland.)
Janbooth I've just reread your post & noticed that in 1861 Fred's father is listed as Joseph Arthur, so I guess that more or less proves the connection. (Definately no trip to Ballachulish then.)
I wonder if he was stationed there as Wirrell suggested. No idea how to find that out.
I'm going to talk to my Dad ASAP perhaps tomorrow evening & see what his thoughts are on this.

Spoke to my Dad re evidence so far that FRED GIBSON's family could possibly come from Whissendine. He's happy to believe it, although he said the whole family always said his grandad was Scottish.
Have been looking on FreeBMD for FRED GIBSON's birth but can only come up with an entry for sept 1879 Oakham 7a 329. So much for the 1901 census where he says he comes from Leic Spinney Hills! So maybe he was born in whissendine like his siblings.
I think the only option is to send to Oakham for this birth cert, and fingers crossed he's my Fred.
Cheers to you all for your help & suggestions.

Well, how's this for service. I posted an application for a birth cert for Fred last night and this morning I got a call from Rutland register office. The Cert I'd asked for did not have the parents of Joseph Arthur and Ellen. But had John Knight Gibson and Rosetta as parents. He than asked me if I still wanted the Cert. Brilliant service give that man a star!
That just leaves the problem of finding my Fred's birth. I did search the index's from 1879 to 1881 a while ago for a registration in Leic but came up with no hits.
So does anyone have any ideas for finding Fred please, given that legend has it he was born in Scotland but census says leicester & his older siblings were born in Whissendine in Rutland.
