The American author Howard Phillips ("H.P.") LOVECRAFT (1890-1937), traced his ancestry back through Joseph S LOVECRAFT of Broadhempston, Devon, who emigrated with his family to Upper Canada in 1827 and thence to New York. Joseph, born c.1775, likely in Broadhempston or possibly Woodland, was the "sixth child and third son" (to quote H.P.) of Thomas LOVECRAFT of Devon and (at least from some accounts I've seen) Leticia EDGECOMBE. My own ancestry traces back to a Sarah LOVECRAFT of Devon (1769/70-1847), who in 1794 in Broadhempston married John TROOD (1768-1853), originally of Moreton-Hampstead. I strongly suspect that Joseph S and Sarah LOVECRAFT of Broadhempston were brother and sister, given that that surname and its variants are not very widespread, but I haven't yet located records to identify/confirm their parents. Has anyone conducted prior research on the family of Thomas LOVECRAFT (c.1745?) or other LOVECRAFTs in Devon that might shed some light on whether this is the case? Unfortunately, almost all the publicly available genealogies on this name that I've seen so far lack primary sources. Thx!
