I have come across one of my ancestors whowas a lance corporal in the Royal Engineers.
He was Frederick Charles Johnson b 1879. This was his occupation in 1914. Is there any where on line that I may find some more details about his military career?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/ can give you medal cards. you have to pay a small price for them though. I have done this for many of my ancestors.

Apart from the medal cards, there are records - held at The National Archvies in Kew - however, many service records were destroyed or damaged by fire in WW2. To find out what records exist use TNA' research guides:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1
scroll down to 'B' and look at entries prefixed 'British Army'
He may be mentioned in the 'National Roll of the Great War' which can be viewed online at pay-per-view sites such 'findmypast' - butcoverage is far from complete.
