ALFRED FRANCIS was the licensee for the CROWN & COLUMN, Ker St, Plymouth.1910 Kellys Trade Directory.

1919 Kellys directory lists WILLIAM BENJAMIN DEAN as the licensee.

ALFRED FRANCES moved to a small hamlet in Dorset 1918-1919. (the area was then in Hampshire). Believe his wife was Edith and they had 3 children. It is believed he was in the R.N. before he was a licensee.

I would like to know what date he actually gave up the public house so that I can pinpoint the date of his arrival in Dorset.

Can anyone assist me. I am inquiring for a relative of his in New Zealand.

You might find what you want using other Plymouth or Devon directories issued between 1910 and 1919. There is a comprehensive list of what is available at http://www.devon.gov.uk/localstudies/100208/1.html which should help you decide which directories would be suitable. Then maybe you can find someone to do specific lookups for you.
Alternatively if you have access to Ancestry you could check the Telephone Directories for that period.

Yes, I already have looked up in the historical directories for Plymouth but like all things the Directories are not all there.

Will try the site you suggested. Thanks for that

Does the pub still exist?

If so, is it a managed house? If so, for which brewery?

Contact the brewery and ask if they could check their archives.

Or.... if the pub is a freehouse, contact the present landlord/lady and ask if they know of where you could find out some history about the pub.

Although there is a possibility that the pub is still there, Plymouth suffered greatly during the Blitz. After the war the City Council made the decision that rather than repair the damage they would just bulldoze the city centre and start again. As you can imagine, this makes life very difficult when trying to find pre-war addresses.

However I have always found the people at the Plymouth Record Office to be very helpful, it might be worth writing to them or emailing them.

Thank you SUEDENT.

I have now contacted the Records Office and they have confirmed that Alfred Francis gave the Crown and Column over in 1912.

There are no directories for the War 1. years apparently. Thank you and kind regards.
