Hello, I am a new user to your site and a novice in family research. I have got so far and wonder where is next best place to go. This is what I have:
Pallots Directory Marriage 1810 St. Andrews, Holborn John Platt Swift and Ann Carpenter. Marriage was checked for me by The Guildhall Library in St. Andrews Parish Registers and they say: marriage by Banns, no fathers details for either but witnesses were William Brown and James Willan.
I wondering where to go from here, should I search for record of the church banns? Would this give me any fathers details? I cannot seem to find any info on church banns anywhere, are the records of any use?
Or should I now transfer my research to Halifax, Yorks and look for birth of John Platt Swift?
Two of John Platt Swift & Ann's sons were christened middle name Carpenter and one has Beaumont - the Beaumont middle name has been found in more recent generations.
I have traced him 1841 cenus and 1851 census he was born in Halifax, Yorks about 1784. I am not sure if I should post my query in Middlesex or Yorkshire and if the latter which bit of Yorkshire.

The 1810 entry in Pallot's seems to be for James Platt Swift, not John. Who exactly are you looking for, James or John?
If it is James Platt Swift then a Google search for that name turns up a thread about the Swift family on genealogy.com that mentions him.

The entry is very clear.
Carpenter, Ann
= Swift, Jas Platt
St AndHolborn B 1810
Hughar is right Jas is short for James but did not some James use John and vice versa?

Mutley, you must have looked at the Ann Carpenter slip, which does indeed say Swift, Jas Platt. But on the corresponding male slip, the name James is spelled out in full.

Well! what do you know?
Hughar.
I had no idea that they had a slip each. It's true then, that we learn something new everyday;)

There was a thread on the forum that has a reference to St Andrews, marriages and banns. You may find it useful

I cannot find a John or James Platt Swift birth in Halifax on IGI in 1784.
This is the only one that may be of interest to you.
John Swift
Christened 15 Aug 1784 at Saint Andrew Holborn.
Parents, Cornelius Swift and Sarah.
Batch No. PO10516

Hello,
Thank you for the responses. The correct name is James,I cannot explain why I put John, possibly had John on the brain from another branch.
I have looked at the links but could not get anything with the general google search engine or do I search in this forum??
The marriage is in St Andrews, Holborn records but I do not know what is in a banns register and whether it would be worth my travelling to London from Midlands to look at it . I have not used Boyds on origins but will take out a subscription try that next if you think worthwhile.
James Platt Swift shown as Plattroy in error on 1841 census H0107/33/25
James Platt Swift 1851 census H107/193/56 shows born Halifax - I checked the scan again and it definitely says Halifax, Yorks. No trace on census after that, I tried other areas but no luck and could not trace a death.
His 7 children are on IGI batch no. C037211 Henry 1816, George 1825, James 1819, Ann 1823, Richard Carpenter 1813, Richard Beaumont 1828, Francis Carpenter 1821. The boys first names appear regularly in future generations but have not seen a Cornelious so I think that one for father is unliklely but I will keep him in mind.
I have only traced future generations through James and George, fortunately George is my line - I could not find what happened to the other children (have some misc. possibles).
With the unusual middle names, I thought I should be able to trace something and that perhaps it is my inexperience holding me back.

Go to Google and search on "James Platt Swift" (with the quote marks). You should get one result, which is about your man.
