I'm interested in looking for family announcements in the newspaper in the London area in primarily the 1920's.

I'm not local and can't get to a London library and I'm not even certain what newspaper I should be looking in!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Alison

Hello Alison

You can find out what newspapers exist for the time and place you are interested in the British Library catalogue Newspaper subset:
http://catalogue.bl.uk/F/DT7KMH18UFVCA562P91LJ2CQMJKQVYKYXYFF76F2FF5ATHL3SP-37487?func=file&file_name=find-b - just type in the name of the place.

As to where you might see them I think it extremely unlikely you will find them anywhere but the British Library Newspaper collection at Colindale or the relevant local studies library (and they are unlikely to have them all).

Unless someone else knows better.

If you have the date it's always worth emailing the local studies library - they are unlikely to do a search without payment (if at all) but you might well find that they will copy the relevant page for a specified date.

If the family considered themselves "posh" enough they may have placed any announcement in the London Times. This newspaper has a digital archive online for the period 1785 - 1985.

Many local libraries have access which is free for the user. if you are lucky enough your local library may even have the facility to allow you to log on from home.

Thanks Colin and Doug. I shall look into both of those options and see what I can come up with.

Many thanks:)
