Hi there,
Iam trying to find Charles MacIver who immigrated to Canada early 1900's.
He was born about 1880 and later became a Police Chief in Winnipeg.
Would anyone be able to give me an idea as to where to search for info.
Thanks heaps

Hi
This online book on the history of the Winnipeg Police has a brief account of Charles .On this link gives his birth as Nov 1 1887 in Stornoway Scotland
http://136.159.239.232/e/page.aspx?id=532483
I think I have found him in the 1911 census as a patrolman on automated genealogy which is free to search- look for Mcivor in Manitoba
There are many spelling variations of that surname!
Good find, Keewatin. Fascinating reading about Winnipeg in the 1940s and 50s, too.
Following through on this information: the 1901 census has the following:
Census: 1901: Parish Uig; ED 1; Line 21
Address: 6 Breasclete, Uig, Ross and Cromarty
-- Donald MacIver 40 Head Crofter born Breasclete, Ross
-- Christina MacIver 40 Wife born ditto
-- Catherine MacIver 15 Daur Scholar born ditto
-- Charles MacIver 13 Son Scholar born ditto
-- Mary MacIver 11 Daur Scholar born ditto
-- Johanna MacIver 2 Daur Scholar [sic] born ditto
-- Neil MacIver 2 Son Scholar [sic] born ditto
-- Christina An MacIver 6 months Daur born ditto
In 1891, Charles is listed as Angus Charles McIver [sic], 3 years old:
Census: 1891: Parish Uig; ED 1; Line 25
Address: Breasclet, Ross and Cromarty
-- Donald McIver 30 Head Crofter & Fisherman born Uig, Ross-Shire
-- Christina McIver 30 Wife Crofter's Wife born ditto
-- Catherine McIver 5 Daur Scholar born ditto
-- Angus Charles McIver 3 Son Scholar born ditto
-- Mary McIver Daur Scholar born ditto

ThankYou so much for the info. What a great find Keewatin. The story was
fantastic. Iam having trouble finding my way round the automatedgenealogy.
I cant seem to get the actual census. Would it have on it who is actually in
the household?
I was unsure who Charles's father was as there were 3 brothers with a son
called Charles. Thanks for that one Trish.
Both your help is very much appreciated

I have a distant cousin in winneypeg, his family went there in the early 1900's although from Birmingham. Donald is a retired school principal.
I will email him to see if he can supply any further information.

Here is the page that Charles is on. He's a lodger along with 2 other patrolmen. To get the image click on "split View"

Thanks again everyone. The link was great Keewatin. My dial-up is very slow
but that worked perfectly . Any info would be much appreciated. I believe a
few of the Charles siblings, as well as 2 uncles went to Canada.

Well I suppose I might be closer than Mariac as Winnipeg is just a mere 15 hour drive from me and I have been there a few times. I actually got to that site by googling: I know only a little about Canadian genealogy.
Maria if you are trying to find out more about Charles you will be stymied by privacy laws.If you google Manitoba Vital Records you'll find you can't get bmd records for more recent events eg births only over 100 years ago unless you are a direct descendent , can prove it and have permission from other family members.
Here's a wild suggestion (never tried it myself): there are 28 mcivors/macivers in the white pages on this link. (I just googled white pages Manitoba) You could try writing to them all, explaining your interest in family history and connection to Charles. Maybe you'd get lucky and find a direct descendant or other relative?
http://www.whitepages.ca/10655/search/FindPerson?extra_listing=mixed&form_mode=opt_b&post_back=1&firstname_begins_with=1&firstname=&name=McIver&street=&city_zip=&state_id=manitoba&localtime=survey
Most of the places ,but not all, are districts in Winnipeg
I will pm you some other info

Maria do you have the names and birth years of the uncles and siblings who came to Canada?
If they came prior to 1911 you might try searching on the census at automatedgenealogy
If Charles' brothers came prior to WW1, they may have joined up in Canada and if so you may find their attestation papers online at the Canadian National Archives here
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/cef/index-e.html
You could also look on the lists of passengers leaving the UK on the website findmypast. It is a pay to view website but is free to search
I noticed that Charles served in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 and the Canadian archives site says that those records are at the UK National Archives
Are you getting information overload yet?

Thanks a million Keewatin.
I shall spend many happy hours going through the sites to see if I can find
any connections.
