Do not know what forum this should go in, sorry but I have hit a major brick wall that is really making me cry |computer|.

This concerns genes reunited. My problem is that I have found several of my ancestors on someone's tree there and although I have sent the tree owner several messages and he has not responded - I have been waiting weeks. How do I crack this brick wall? He has some of my Leyman ancestors on his tree. I think it is very mean of someone not to respond as maybe I can help as well. My tree is at another site and I really don't want to load it up to another site as it would be loads of work continually updating. What advice do you have.

Hi Vanessa,

If the person doesn't choose to respond to your emails, there is not much you can do about it.

There could be all sorts of reasons for someone to fail to respond. The person may no longer be a member of Genes Reunited for example, or ill, or no longer have an internet connection...

As Bo Peep says, if someone doesn't respond after a couple of messages, then all you can do is move on. In general, it would be polite to respond to an enquiry, but not everyone will.

Call me "miss cup half full" but as that site is one that forwards your email onward and you don't really know where it's going, perhaps the person you are trying to reach has changed their email and it's bouncing back and falling into a black hole.

I've never contacted anybody through that site, so I don't know how reliable it is.

I did take a look at it and it appears that it will give you the persons full name (if they put it on there) but not their email. I'd try googling their name with leyland and see if that doesn't turn up a reference to that tree being posted elsewhere.

Their FAQS section doesn't give any info, other than to contact genes....... if the FAQ didn't answer your question. So zip off an email to them. If the person is not contactable then they need to take the info off so you don't have a coronary. ;-)

You could always upload a GEDCOM onto genes, let it sit there and wait for him to contact you when his "hot matches" are flagged up.

The GEDCOM could just be of likely bodies that would make a "hit", rather than your whole family.

Thanks every one! I have tried all of the above advice and found nothing on him, or anyone else by googling or otherwise. I am unintelligent when it comes to partial GEDCOM's and wouldn't have a clue how to produce one. I have FTM- I guess I could try doing it and see where it ends up - I would just have to delete a whole bunch of stuff - I'm not lazy just sick with pneumonia and don't fancy all the work. I am so dissappointed in this person because I got so excited to find anything about Leyman. I have been researching for a long time. I just hope this person isn't dead - I may just have to ____ him!|scold|?

I wish I had the smarts in being able to weed him out. And I did contact Genes. Maybe they will have an answer, one can only hope!

After finding my husband's name listed on there, without permission, (as in my tree he's listed as a Living Individual) ....... I sent a message to the person concerned.

No reply received, but I knew that if someone lets their membership lapse, for whatever reason, although they do receive your message, they are unable to reply.

I contacted the owners of the site and they removed the name of course, but they chose to ignore my suggestion of removing trees/listed surnames from the site, of non-members. As someone said, this is probably to keep the number of trees uploaded to a very high number! |scold|

I have been a member of Genes Reunited for three years but I am not renewing my membership when it comes up this month. I have written to many People on there that seem to have a connection but a lot of them do not answer and although I accept there are a lot of reasons for this I think the problem lies with Genes Reunited as they let anyone put there tree on there.

It is just about numbers to them they do not listen to the People that subscribe to the site, but if we all voted with our feet they might do something about it.

I have met a lot of nice People through GR and have had a lot of help also, but it is time for me to move on as I have also been very upset by the fact at how frustrating it is at not getting a reply. I always reply to anyone who contacts me whether we are connected or not. It is good manners. Also their hot matches are misleading I have had People requesting I open my tree with no explanation why they want to see it probably because one of my People have come up in a hot match and can't understand why when they have opened their tree to me I won't open mine to them even though they won't explain who they are interested in.

I prefer this site and another for the message boards now.

Jill

I also am a member of GR and also get frustrated with non-replies. I have a few that have 50+ matches and have sent several messages with never a reply. I now ignore the name when I see it in my HotMatches.

I think that they keep the non-members trees for everyone to view and members to make contact in the hope that a member makes contact with a non-member and this inturn enticing them to join to return the reply.

The site has undergone, and is still undergoing, massive changes and has now become a lot slower than it used to be.

Carrie and Jillychris,
I don't know now whether to upload a small tree there or not. I paid for a sub til April and I know I won't be renewing it. It is a slow site and the message boards are a disaster, and I do not think that a sub holder should have to pay to check the Free BMD's either. |scold| I have a sub with A and it is easy to use and has the most info. Findmypast credits used up and have to get some more but it doesn't really help me much, tho I have found things there. I did get 1 match off Genes that is legit and we are now communicating via email. Their info filled in some gaps and they had lost their trail so they were as shocked as I when it turned out we were cousins. I did double check their info before I allowed access to my tree. I guess I got too excited about Genes :o.

I too prefer this site for q&a and I learn so much every day. Each post offers insight and extra tips. I have post-it notes stuck all over my desk! I will try FTM and at worst input some part of my tree at Genes. I should have kept separate trees for each of my families but I didn't expect it to get so big and involved! Thanks you two - 2 heads is better than mine at the moment. Thanks Carrie for your kind offer!|hug|

Hi Vanessa

Although I am not going to subscribe again to GR I am going to leave my tree on there as I have had some good contacts from it.

I think People can still contact you and as far as I know you can answer them when they do, but until I unsubscribe I will not know.

If People contact me and I cannot reply I will take my tree off there.

Uploading a gedcom is quite easy contact me if you have problems as I have FTM too.

Jill

"You do not have to be a full member of GenesReunited to reply to an email."

This message is on Genes in their FAQ
they also say they are working on being able to tell us when message has been read

but of course they cannot make people reply and so we are at the whim of the receiver,

I think we have all been at the receiveing end of no replys, but I have also had some very good replys, I have been a member of GR since its beginning and intend to stay, yes some messages are unnecessary and so I dont read them, and yes for message boards this site is far superior for help, but I have made more family tree contacts so think its well worth the small fee.
