Established in 2003, 'Your Old Books & Maps' provide Army Lists reproduced as facsimiles, in searchable, bookmarked PDF format on CD-Rom. Many of these original books cost hundreds of pounds to purchase - and for research purposes, this can obviously be prohibitive. We offer a value for money alternative to the originals, by producing quality facsimiles as a CD-Book at a fraction of the cost!. All you need is one of the free PDF Readers (Adobe 5+ or equivalent) which are included on the disc.
British Army War Office /H.M.S.O. Lists.
Using the official Army Lists you can research the military service of Officers. They will give you details of the unit he served, with details of rank and date he was promoted to that rank. It is possible to build up a picture of his military career from the lists that cover his service. They begin with a list of the officers by rank, generals through to lieutenants, with their name, and the date they received their commission. Then officers with their regiment, starting with the Cavalry, Dragoons, Guards, Artillery and the regiments of foot etc...
Harts Army Lists.
There were two issues of Harts Army Lists, a quarterly issue from 1839 which continued until the outbreak of war in 1914 and an annual list from 1840 to 1915. Both contain the usual lists of General and Field Officers, Regimental lists, Staff and Garrison Establishments, and include the dates of the various promotions of officers. They also include the war service of each officer, which was not available in official lists until 1881. Full regimental lists of the Militia were added in 1854 on embodiment, the Indian Army in 1862, Yeomanry in 1881, and the Special Reserve and Territorial Force in 1909. The quarterly lists dealt only with officers on the Active List, whereas the annual included all officers, whether on the Active, Half-Pay or Retired Lists.
The Harts Lists also give details of War Services of the Officers, with details such as Medals, Campaigns, War wounds, Citations in the London Gazette etc.
'Your Old Books & Maps' is fast becoming (if not already) the foremost supplier of Army Lists on CD/DVD. See the full selection here (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_1800.html).
