Here is the family in 1901, still at 55 Trumpet Terrace
RG13/4895 folio 71 page 9
Maria ANDERSON Head Wid 44 b Cumberland, Alston
John son 24 iron ore miner b Alston
Martha dau 18 housemaid domestic b Cleator Moor
Matthew son 16 in linen mill b Cleator Moor
Thomas son 14 in linen mill b Cleator Moor
Mary dau 6 b Cleator Moor
The question is, of course, who was Mary's father if Maria was already a widow in 1891?
I think this is the right family, as a couple pages further on (folio 72 page 11) at 11 Trumpet Road is
Ralph RAINE Head Mar 58 iron ore miner b Alston
Betsy wife 57 b Alston
Tamar ANDERSON niece 11 scholar b Cleator Moor
Looking back I discover that Ralph and Betsy were actually living next door but one to Maria and family in 1891 in Trumpet Terrace (see above posting) and Tamar was with them then as well.
In 1881 (RG11/5191 folio 110 page 34) Maria's husband, Matthew, was still alive. Matthew ANDERSON married Maria STOUT in Alston Dec qtr 1874 vol 10b page 735, so I can only assume that Betsy Raine's maiden name was STOUT as well (Yep, Dec qtr 1869 Betsy STOUT married Ralph RAIN (no e) in Alston.
1881 census shows that Mathhew ANDERSON was also an iron ore miner, so I don't know where the surveyor came in - perhaps in a later generation?
Matthew ANDERSON Head Mar 29 iron ore miner b. Durham, Harwood
Maria wife 23 Cumberland Garrigill
Nicholas V son 6 b Garrigill
John J son 4 b Garigill
Tibb dau 2 b Garigill
