I live in Nassau where I am a Writer. I spend a lot of time researching the colourful History of The Bahamas. Many people are not aware that the early Settlers of The Bahamas arrived here from England, Scotland, and Ireland. They came to our Shores with their slaves after The American War of Independence in 1776. Some English Settlers came during the 17th Century.

I also have a passion for Genealogy and have taken the last fifteen years to study my own.

I have been searching for the Family of Charles Poitier who came to The Bahamas in 1798. He was a Member of Her Majestý's East India Regiment.
His Business Partner was Joseph Hunter who became his Father-In-Law.

Poitier is a French name, but I believe Mr. Poitier came from England.

I am going to enjoy my stay at British Genealogy.com

Christmas has come to the Bahamas early this year, but not a time of gifts,
friendship, and cheer. As I write to you, Hurricane Noel is lurking near our shores.

Hurricanes are not new to our region, but every new one brings challenges and uncertainty.
Today, the Weather is cloudy, the sun peeked out a little bit, but decided to go back in until things around here get better.

As you are aware, there are 700 islands and cays about 25 are inhabited, all stretching in a chain. Information about oncoming Hurricanes or other disasters have to be sent by Radio, Cable television, cell phones, or Satellite phones to all of these island residents. We call them "Family Islands".

Living so close to the United States also has it assets. The nearest island, called" Bimini " is less than half an hour away from Miami by Jet Aircrafts.
Where I live in Nassau, the flight to Miami is approximately thirty five minutes
on Bahamasair, The National Airline of The Bahamas 737 - 120 seater Jet Aircrafts. We also have Dash 8's fifty three seaters twin engin Jet aircrafts which travels to most of the Family Islands.

Other means of Family Island transportation are air conditioned Fast Ferries.
Mail boats are also used to carry passengers and freight.

You can see the Ocean, blue sea, and other islands through picture windows as you travel. But, if you enjoy the longer, old means of travel, we have that as well.
Christmas is a fun time around here, but, we will be happy to see the last of HURRICANE NOEL

Have a good evening from Nassau.

My Dear Friends,

One of the advantages of living so close to the United States is the ability
to travel to many US cities especially if you are a Writer "In Search of History". Another advantage is that my husband is an airline pilot which makes my ticket cost fairly reasonable.

Just after the hurricane, I had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia,
then on to Charlotte, and Raleigh Durham, North Carolina. This was excellent
for me since I am researching the Loyalists who remained faithfull to King George 111, after the American War of Independence in 1776. These men and women lived in the Southern States which included Georgia, North and South Carolina.

I have no great love for flying, but where History and Genealogy are concerned, I went on this trip. I will tell you the flight plan.

From Nassau to Atlanta on USA MD 88
Atlanta to Charlotte USA Boeing 737 Jet Aircraft
Charlotte to Raleigh NC Airbus 319

I was like a kid in a candy shop at "The Historical Publication, Office of Archives and History in Raleigh which is named after English Explorer
Sir Walter Raleigh. There were so many books and historical information.
I found myself purchasing many books which are not available in my Region.

In my search for History in North Carolina, I came across
a Slave name POMPEY and his family. This particular slave is recorded in Bahamian History. In Nassau, it is written that his Master was from NC, and had relocated to the Bahamas. I can now tell everyone that Pompey came from North Carolina.

Well, bye for now. Wish me luck on my new book "In search of History"
I will write again soon.

I have a list of Charles Poitier's military appointments from 31 Aug 1793 until 1820. Do you have this, or would you be interested to receive it?

http://
books.google.com/books?as_brr=0&q=%22charles+poitier%22+jamaica&btnG=Search+Books should take you to a link for page 170 of Vol.V of the 3rd edition of 'The Royal Military Calendar, Or Army Service and Commission Book', by John Phillipart, published 1820. Click on the link to see the entry. You can read or search the whole book if you wish, but this does seem to be the only mention of Poitier that it contains.

Your man appears to have had an interesting military career, in what looks like eight different units.

Also if you go to http:
//beta.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London and search for the phrase Charles Poitier between say 1790 and 1830 you will find four references covering some of his career steps, and read the original entries.

Another military reference from 1911, with his name misspelled Poitiers
www.
google.co.uk/search?hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=+%22charles+poitiers%22+india&btnG=Search&meta

Daughter Elizabeth Poitier's marriage to Virginius Murray mentioned at
www.
balliol.ox.ac.uk/history/miscellany/founders2/index.asp
http:
//archives.balliol.ox.ac.uk/History/foundersscott.asp

Several references to Elizabeth Poitier's marriage and descendants if you Google for the misspelled name "Elizabeth Alicia Poitiers"

Let me know if you have any problems with any of these links.

Good Evening everyone,

I have been going over my posts and realize that I did not respond to receiving Charles Poitier's Military appointments. I would be very pleased to receive these records. Hopefully they would say that he was born in England and not France.
Bahamian records have revealed that Charles, his family and slaves sailed onto our shores from Jamaica, so he must have sailed from England to Jamaica, then Cat Island in the Bahamas. Joseph Hunter, his partner was also his father-in-law.

I realize that my research has been going on for years, but I can't stop until I can find the true identity of Charles Poitier.
