Hi there,
I am new to this... I have been trying to locate some info about my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather who was a Coastguard, he was born in Chatham in Kent c1820. He was based in Alverstoke as a Coasguard in the 1871 Census but i am unable to find him in earlier Census records... Any tips? I have tried changing spellings etc... My Gr Gr Grandfather Edward William Lloyd (his son) was born, Lydd, Romney Marsh in 1853, but i have still been unable to find them..

If you look here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Coastguards/J-L.html
(which is taken from the 1861 Census also, he is named as William) Could this be why he has been difficult to trace? Was he William or Edward?
Just a thought.

Yes he was called Edward on his marriage certificate with no middle name suggested so i don't know where the "William" part comes from as his Fathers name is down as John Lloyd on the cert... John's occupation is "Seaman" so i think i'm going to have a real trial trying to locate them!
I did manage to find them in the 1861 Census but am still stumped for 1851 & 1841.
Elizabeth - Edwards wife i have found however in the 1851 Census
HO 107/1659 living 10 Ivy Street, Portsea. Their marriage certificate places Edward living also in Ivy Street at the time of marriage. Could this have been because he was on a ship?
Thank you for the link too... i did find it interesting!

Thank you Sue, Great stuff!
Jane was Edwards step daughter, Elizabeth was married previously but was widowed. Am still trying to locate Edward/William in 1851 & 1841 Census, think its going to be a tough one!

Quite often when a couple married they used the bride's address, it happened on several occasions with some of my ancestors, not necessarily because the man was on a ship.
I believe it cost more to have the bans called in another parish as well, but someone will correct me if I am wrong.
Possibly Edward may have been at sea in 1851? Just a thought.
