I have a marriage certificate dated 15/12/1876 for a JAMES CLOSE giving his profession as Sergant in the 22nd Foot and his residence as Fleetwood.
I presume this is his barracks??
Anyone able to tell me more information on the 22nd Foot and possibly where the barracks were/are?
Thanks:)

The 22nd Regiment were The Cheshire Regiment. In 1876 there were 2 Battalions. The 1st were at Fleetwood, and the 2nd in India (Raniket, Bengal).
Don't know much about Fleetwood barracks, but I'm sure Google will turn up something. I do remember having to stay there briefly in the 1960's, just before going off to Cyprus.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge re the military....
I have had a few thoughts....
Would his sign up papers say where he was from or anything about his next of kin/contact addresses etc?
This guy seems to be my only hope of finding out where the family originated from in Ireland.
His Irish father was a shoemaker,so I imagine he came over to England to flee the famine rather than follow in this father's shoes (ha!!!:o) so to say!
5 years later his brother John was at Chatham & Adjacent Barracks in Kent RG11/896 p 40 (in the 22nd foot too), but I can't see JOHN or JAMES in the 1871 census anywhere. They could have been in Ireland or serving overseas.
If they were overseas, are there any census records kept for those soldiers, or information of who was posted where and when??
Also - if half JAMES's regiment was in India- would he have probably taken a tour of duty there at sometime, and what would they be doing once back in England?
How would I find out what dates the brothers served for the 22nd foot?
I know James became a police constable in Salford once he left the service.
Any pointers anyone :)

Hi Nicos,
This is my first time on BG. I came across your entry whilst googling "James Close". I am researching people buried at Weaste Cemetery, Salford, Greater Manchester. I came across the gravestone of James Close and I believe he is the same James Close you are researching. The stone reads:
JAMES CLOSE, Late of Salford Police, died 9th Nov 1889 aged 38 years.
Also JOHN CLOSE, died 1st March 1916 aged 62 years.
Also MARY, (wife of John Close), died 2 November 1926, aged 66.
If you have any info on James and John I would be pleased to receive it. If it's OK with you, I'd like to post it on the Friends of Salford Cemeteries Trust website www.weasteheritagetrail.co.uk. My personal email is
pete DOT kilvert AT ntlworld DOT com
Would you like a photo of the grave?
Best Wishes PeteK

It appears to have been Euston Barracks. This site will give you some some information about it. Don't be put off when you see it's a history of Fleetwood Golf Club, information
comes from the oddest of sources sometimes.
