Hi,

Is anyone else researching the name of Clinch from Cholsey?, I believe the town was originally in Berkshire, but now in Oxford (please correct me if I am wrong), so I have placed this message on the Oxford board as well as this one!! I am looking at Augusta Clinch baptised in Cholsey in April 1797, married in 1835 at St. George the Martyr, Southwark, to Thomas Hunt, who in 1830 was the landlord of the Coach and Horses in Kings Street, Oxford. Thomas then went on to the Anchor public house in Shepperton, in about 1851. Augusta's parents were Thpmas Clinch and Betsey Monoe.

I understand that the Clinch family came from Cholsey for many generations, so if anyone is interested in comparing notes, please contact me. Does anyone know the name of the church in Cholsey, and is there a graveyard attached, or is there a community cemetery? Have there been any books on the town written, and if so, where can I buy them from.

Hope to hear from someone soon.

Regards,

Carol

Hi Carol

According to Colin Harris's "Oxfordshire Parish Registers and Bishops Transcripts - 6th Edition" the church at Cholsey was dedicated to St. Mary. You are correct in thinking that the village used to be in Berkshire. A Google search will bring up lots of information, including pictures of the church.

The parish registers have been transcribed by OFHS and are available on microfiche or CD. The MI have also been transcribed and come with pictures.

For books try the Bodleian Library catalogue, which is entitled to a copy of all books published in the UK - and now includes items held at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies. Or The British Library Catalogue. You can't borrow the books, but at least you'll know they exist, and maybe get them from abebooks. There look to be some useful titles.

Hi Carol,

I have been looking at CLINCH connections in the two counties (and further afield) although the main areas of interest are around Bampton and Wantage. I have noted others, for interest, in the surrounding locations.
