Dear Scottie:
Here I am again looking (again) for a Norman in Padstow. We thought that there were no more Normans in Padstow after 1700 however, I just found a Joseph Norman who was born in Padstow as late as 1878...so there must have been a presence there. I found him in the 1901 Census. It appears he was a cooper by occupation and moved to Devonport and was listed as a lodger in "Sailors Rest", on Fore Street, in Devonport. Is there any place I can look to see the parentage or siblings or history of this person?
Thanks so much, Scottie.
Peace!

[QOTE=Scottie]:) Welcome to Padstow. At present there is no OPC but I keep a database from 1881 backwards. I am always willing to share information when I have it.
Regards,
Scottie

Dear Kathryn,
Happy to hear from you again but I am afraid I cannot help much here. I do not have access to the Parish register which is at CRO in Truro. However you may find him at FreeBMD and then you would have to buy the certificate to get the details. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ He is not in my DB which tells me he was probably gone by 1881. I have to go out this morning but I will check the 1881 for him when I get back so hold on as that may give him with his parents and that will be a big help. :D Maybe SKS will do it for you before I get the chance though |angel|

I am back but a search of the national index in 1881 brings up no Joseph Norman born in Cornwall I am afraid. Maybe it was wishful thinking on his part. Try looking for him in 1891 and see where he says he was born. There is a Joseph born Devonport in 1875 whose father is George but he was born in Stoke Damerel too. Could this be he? He had a sister Mary and brothers George & Henry in 1881.

Dear Scottie:
This is truly a mystery! I'll have to try to get my head around this one! In the 1901 census I also have a George Norman (at the time 22 yrs old) born in Callington (on 59 Markenfield Road) who, in 1901 was a college student in Stoke Within...the town was Guildford. This Joseph who said he was born in Padstow was living in 1901 in "Sailors Rest", in Devonport. He was single but 23 yrs. old in 1901. But why would Joseph give his birthplace as Padstow? Unless this place called "Sailors Rest" which housed 100+ men was for men who lived in Port towns (such as Padstow.) He wasn't a sailor...but a cooper. I'll have to look into it further...I'd love to find a remnant of our Normans left behind in Cornwall. I thought he would have been a descendant of one. I'll have to contact the CRO again. Thanks again Scottie! So good of you to answer me so quickly and thoroughly!
Peace!
Kathryn
