Thanks for info Ron. 1535 is my earliest finding in this line so I think I must call it a day. I have many other lines to hunt down. Cheers.

First off, you're lucky to get back this far - but as you've reached a point which pre-dates parish registers there may be hope.
First off where did the information come from regarding the birth and marriage? (It may save me typing something you have already tried).

Firstly from old family tales, then the info from IGI as confirmation.
I have loads of lines but this one is the earliest. Ideally I would like to go back pre 1485 when I would be satisfied. Call it a quirk of nature if you like - I'm trying to reach the times of the Plantagenets. 1535 means I am only 50 years short, what's that? Two generations?
I also have tales of Puritan ancestors and some who took part in the Civil War (Parliamentarians) but these would belong to other lines.

I would never, ever, under any circumstance take information from the IGI as confirmation. As a starting point to give ideas, yes - but nothing more. It is only an index, it contains transcription errrors even in the extracted entries.
Trace a family back using directories, census returns, parish registers, manorial documents, wills, musters, subsidies, apprenticeship indentures and other work related documents - the list goes on.
Once you get back beyond parish registers, manorial documents continue to be useful, as do musters and subsidies. Other sources dealing with inherit ed or transferred property include Inquisitions Post Mortem (which can be difficult), Licences to Alienate, records of the Court of Ward and Liveries, Common Recoveries, Feet of Fines, enrolled deeds - if your family worked for a large estate there may be accounts. There is a lot of information, but it needs very careful study and I recommend that you obtain a decent book or two on the subject to help guide you properly.
I have loads of lines but this one is the earliest.
But if you only have the IGI as a source how do you know it is correct?
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be negative - but I hate to see people going down the wrong line for want of checking information.

I've been trying to get back one generation for 10 years - it takes time to proceed the further back you go and sometimes you can only infer what might have happened.
