Dear Forum members

I have now information which confirms that my my great great grandfather Richard Goodey and Mary Goodey (nee Goodey - a cousin I believe) were married at St Mary Parish Church, Newington, Surrey (nowadays Southwark in London) on 15.7.1840, and the witnesses were Eliza Voller and W M Williams. Address (I presume for Richard Goodey) of 11 East Street, Newington. The Bridegroom's father is given as Robert Goodey, a farmer and bride's father is given as Richard Goodey, a groom (I presume of horses). The age of the couple getting married is given as "of full age" - would that mean age 21? In that case they were both born 1818-1819.

I believe that my great great grand father Richard Goodey was born in Oxfordshire and was a baker like his son my great grand father John Goodey born 23 Feb 1850, who was also a baker.

Can anyone please help go a little further back in tracing birth certificates (and or Marriage Certificates) for Richard Goodey and his father Robert Goodey (possibly born about 1795)and his wife Mary's father also called Richard Goodey.

Many thanks

Richard

Argggggggh - NO.
'Of full age' means they are 21 or over, a very great difference. They could have been any age between 21 and 101. Or even under 21 if they lied to the vicar, which is more than possible. :)
First rule of genealogy - never assume.

"of full age" doesn't really tell you that much. It just meant over 21, but I have known of cases where at least one of the parties was under age and presumably lied because the parents didn't consent.

Pre 1837 you have to rely on parish records and hope that your ancestors were baptised. Have you found him on the census? Where was he born? That should help narrow down the search. You are lucky that if Richard and Mary were cousins you are probably looking for a Robert and Richard who were brothers, which might help to confirm that you have the right people.

I have an interest in the GOODEY family from Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Unfortunately I won't have much time to look at this today and then will be offline for a few days.

If you drop me a line, I'll remember to look at this later. I'd be interested to know what you've got about this family in London and thereabouts.

In the meantime, I can tell you that John's father Richard GOODEY was baptised on 9 November 1817 at Newnham Murren OXF, son of Robert Goodey, labourer, and Mary his wife.

Unfortunately Oxfordshire resources are hard to come by and you'll probably want to look into the range of transcriptions published by Oxfordshire FHS.

Hi Pam, Sue and Peter,

Thanks for clearing that up about the term "of full age". Peter thanks for the info.

I need to dig away at this some more but I think I know who Mary was and I believe that she and Richard were indeed 1st cousins.

The bad news (for you) is that you and I may be some sort of cousins :D :D :D

Hi Peter

Thanks for your reply. So far my resurch with some help from my cousin Diane who has sought a birth cert and a marriage cert for John Goodey my great grand father (who married Mary Ann Hunt) do indeed identify him as a Baker and his father Richard Goodey (who married Mary Goodey nee Goodey) from Oxfordshire as a Baker before him.

It is rather nice to think that we might be distantly related in some way if only for the fact that you were able to help me to locate my father's birth certificate and his parent's marriage certificate about 18 months or so ago, which eventually a year ago led me to be able to regain contact with my father and finding out about his life from him after 50 years of not knowing where he was, and therby finding I had cousins like Diane in this country and Uncles and more cousins in Australia. Sadly my father aged 90 died on 10 Sep this year.

Best Wishes

Richard
