My gt. grandfather was a sergeant in the 2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry and was posted to India in the late 19th century. Where can I find out more about his time in India please?

It all depends on circumstances and dates. If he survived to be discharged, his discharge papers may be a rich source of information..

He did indeed survive to be discharged (he died in 1935 aged 80). In 1889 he was a Sergeant in the 1st Yorkshire Regiment and had retired by 1901, but I am told that he was called up again at the outbreak of WW1 to train conscripts in Woolwich.

Where might I get copies of his discharge papers please?

Martin

This should tell you how to zero in on his records...

If it's not convenient to visit the National Archives, you should be able to get copies of the discharge papers via "Shop Online" from the National Archives home page.
