Hi, l wonder if someone could possibly point me in the right direction? My gggrandfather George NASH joined the 61st regiment of foot in September 1839 and was discharged in June 1861, l have a copy of his discharge papers but l am searching for his Attestation papers in the hope that it may show his parents names?
According to his discharge papers he was born in Stockton, Wilts but l cannot trace any baptism record for George within a 5 mile radius and thought that the above papers could shed some more light on this?
Could anyone tell me where l can search for these documents and what piece No they would be under?

ANY help or guidance would be very much appreciated.
Kind reagrds

Robert

From TNA's research guide
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=15

Para 2 includes........
"The major series of records (and the first place to look for any soldier) resulting from the grant of a pension are the attestation and other discharge documents in WO 97 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/DisplayCatDetailsGoto.asp?catref=WO+97&accessmethod=6) , covering 1756-1913: see British Army Soldiers' Discharge Papers (1760-1913), (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/ExternalRequest.asp?RequestReference=ri2005) for more details. Regimental registers in WO 120 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/DisplayCatDetailsGoto.asp?catref=WO+120&accessmethod=6) can include men not included in WO 97 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/DisplayCatDetailsGoto.asp?catref=WO+97&accessmethod=6) . "

This leaflet
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14 covers discharge documents.

Was he by any chance the son of a soldier and so appear in the regimental registers of births?

Have you found a marriage certificate for him?

Hi, thanks so much for ALL the info, it really is very much appreciated.

George NASH married in 1861 following his discharge, also George deserted shortly after he joined and was sentenced to 2 months hard labour.

His father was not in the army.

Best wishes

So you have his father's name. Is there any mention of the father in the parish registers?

BTW did you confirm that it is the WO 97 papers that you have?

Hi Peter

Yes l do have his fathers name, it was James, l have found a James NAISH on both the 41 & 51 census for the Stockton/Fisherton Delemere area and he was married to a charity (Macey), this fits in nicely with what l know as George and his wife Miriam name there first daughter Diana Charity. However, as l mentioned in my original post l cannot locate a baptism record for George within a 5 mile radius of Stockton? James & Charity are baptising children in the area from 1808 and also baptise a son (Thomas 1823) in Romsey, which shows that they did move around.

The army papers l have on George are (as far as l know) his discharge papers, they outline his service, conduct, theatres of war he fought in and medals he was awarded. They also state that George was 17 1/2 when he joined and gave his birthplace as Codford close to the village of Stockton.................Sorry Peter l`m going on.

Best wishes
Robert

5 miles of Stockton includes the Codfords so you've presumably searched those registers. For that period I don't know what else to suggest.

Presumably you've checked probate records?

Sometimes you're just stuck with the balance of probabilities. From your research in the PRs, you'll have a mini tree of the family - is there a handy gap for your man to slot into?

Hi Peter

Yes l have searched the Codfords for the baptism of my George but alas no luck! l know that James & Charity moved sometime around 1818 to Romsey, they baptise there son Thomas there in 1823, l have searched the Romsey PR`s but again no George.

One other piece of information that l should have mentioned earlier is that George names his father on his marriage cert as James, a James Nash also appears as witness at this marriage!! having searched the census and burial records for Wylye, Stockton, Fisherton l have discovered only one James and he was buried in 1868, this particular James was the same one who married Charity Macey in 1808. All this leads me to believe that James & Charity are the parents of my George but without a baptism record l cannot prove this!

I have also searched for any probate records but alas no records exist, this family were mostly ag labs so a will etc is unlikely to exist.

The hunt continues

Best wishes

I can't help with your specific query about his baptism/parents/attestation etc, but I can give you some details of his military service.

Is he 1230 Private George Nash, 61st Foot?
Served in the 2nd Sikh War 1848-49, and was wounded at both battles of Chillianwallah & Goojerat.
Also served at Delhi during the Indian Mutiny 1857. Back to England 3 May 1858
