[SIZE="5"]Hi folks, just read book by Arthur Mee called "The King's England" first published 1938 - Nottinghamshire. In it he describes various towns, villages, hamlets & churches in detail. My interest is in Hucknall. He discusses the church which is the pilgrimage for Lord Byron devotees, and also he says "...On the tower wall in the vestry is a brass tablet to Elijah West, who rang the bells and sang in the choir for 50 years;...". Is anyone familiar with this book? can anyone tell me the name of the church? My interest is in a family member I am researching whose name was Elijah West living at Hucknall at the 1901 Census. Even if not the same chap, what a lovely coincidence!
So if anybody out there can shed some light for me I would be very grateful.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy these forums - great learning tool, and good fun too. Terrific group of submitters and advisers. TTFN.|help|

It's Hucknall Church - St Mary Magdalene

If you google
"lord byron" church
it's at the top of the list.

Hey Sue, thanks for the tip. Googled as per instructions, and hey presto! there it was, the cutest church home page with contact email addresses and everything. Even a picture! Sent off an email post-haste, and hoping for a positive response. If not my Elijah, no worries - still enjoying the experience of seeing a family name in print!! (not even a "wanted poster" I'm afraid! We are a conservative group! LOL )
Thanks again, bye for now.

Hi folks, more to the story of our "Choir Boy". I had emailed the church and got a lovely reply, including a photo of the plate. The date on it is 1929, and as our lad was recorded on Census 1881-1891-1901 it is conceivable that this could be him. Waiting on some more details - but how exciting to uncover the real people behind the dates on a piece of paper!|jumphappy Can't wait for the next installment.
Bye.:o
