Hi I wonder if anyone can help

M gr gr grandmothers maiden name was Ellen WILBRAHAM . I know that her son George Bills was married in DENNISTOUN (a district of GLASGOW) in 1913 and lived there with his family but can find no record of her birth in Scotland.

Is WILBRAHAM a Jewish name?

Any ideas where I could look?

Thanks for any suggestions

I must confess to knowing nothing about Jewish research, but I do know there is a Jewish Genealogical Society. You may find some help there :)

Best wishes

are you certain she was born in scotland?

I had a family in cheshire and all was going fine until they up and disappeared! When I finally found them they were living in Scotland. Apparently enough men in the family died and he ended up with the castle.

Wilbraham is a name I've run across in Lancashire, Derbyshire & Cheshire quite a bit and not Jewish. Suggest you look down there, there's a lot of Ellen Wilbrahams on the UK census!

I am not sure that she was born in Scotland. I did do a quick look on freebmd about the time I guess she was born and I noticed there were loads of Ellen Wilbrahams. I can find no record of any Wilbraham's born in Scotland so I guess she must be from elsewhere.

I have now found out from the 1871 Census in Glasgow that she was a Londoner - her husband was also English.

Eleanor Wilbraham and James Bills were married in Sep qtr 1867 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England (vol 1c pg 455). Their four oldest children (James--born St. George in the East, 1869-70, died Mar qtr 1872 in St. George in the East vol 1c pg 314; Rebecca--Rebecca Sarah Bills, Jun qtr 1872, St. George in the East, Middlesex, vol 1c pg 133; James(b. about 1874); and Edmund--poss. Edmund James Bills, Dec qtr 1876, West Derby, Lanc. vol 8b pg 571) were born in England prior to their move to Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Scotland in the late 1870's (Joseph having been born in Glasgow in about 1878). They appear in the 1881 Scotland census. In the 1871 census they are in Bethnal Green, London.

James was the son of Joseph and Matilda Bills, and was born in London (poss. Bethnal Green) about 1847-48.

Eleanor was the daughter of possibly James and Charlotte and was born in Stepney, London in Mar qtr 1850 (vol 2 pg 510).
