I am researching my great uncle Sydney Harry Jones who was killed in WW1. Sydney was born in Crewe in 1892 and served in the police force in Liverpool before the outbreak of war. The story goes that in the riots in Liverpool at the turn of the last century Sydney either killed one of the rioters or was badly hurt by one himself which meant that he could only serve in the Labour Corps. I have tried to research this but am reaching dead ends and wonder if anyone could help?

I cannot help directly - but Police Forces sometimes have archivists or museums recording their history - Have you tried the Merseyside Police?
When Police Forces no longer retain records, older documents are sometimes transferred to the local Record Office.
Being born 1892, your chap can only have joined the police just before WW1, which helps to limit your search.
