Trying to establis the birth date and place of origin of Benjamin Wallis of Stanway: it does not appear that he was born in the parish. D.O.B c.1680.
All his children were recorded as having been born in Stanway. I am a descendant of his youngest son, Joseph (b. 1721) who married Mary Sandford in 1744 in Weston Subedge. I would be grateful for any pointers, as I have 'run into the buffers' on this one!

Have you tried the Hearth Tax Returns which commence in 1662? Although they won't show his birth, they are a useful directory to where families were living. If you can locate a group of Wallis entries in a parish somewhere near to Stanway, this might be a good pointer as to which parish registers to try. Some Family History societies have transcribe some Hearth Tax returns - otherwise, the originals are held in The National Arvchives (TNA) at Kew. The Tax was abolished in 1689.

Don't forget that Stanway originates from the Roman Road 'Stane Way' which runs roughly East to West across England.

I think there are others heading North to South.

I assume you mean Stanway, Gloucestershire, whereas I come from Stanway, Colchester, Essex. I believe there are more Stanways in various locations.

You can spot the Stane Way near Colchester on most maps...it generally lies on the old route of the A120.

I can tell you that this Stanway business caught me out a few times.

Regards Alan.

Thanks very much for the info on Hearth Tax; I will certainly follow this up. I have tried to establish possible Wallis links in the nearby parishes, but IGI is naturally very thin for this period. Melton Mowbray and Bedfordshire do not seem to be likely places of origin for Benjamin!

Kew sounds a bit daunting from what I've heard; a week's camping in Kew Gdns. next summer perhaps?

Thanks again.

It isn't that bad actually - have a good browse around TNA's website and that should help you to familiarise yourself with how thigns are arranged.

You can search for document references using the online catalogues. From the home page, move your cursor over 'Search our colletions' and select 'E179 (tax records)' from the drop down menu. You'll be able to see what the coverage is like and also obtain the full reference for it as well.

Good luck
