Somerset Militia in 1800s

I have a Richard Vallis born abt 1791 in Shepton Montague. He joined the Somerset Militia May 8, 1817 for 5 years and completed his term May 8, 1822. Does anyone have any information on the Somerset Militia?

I was chatting to someone the other day who was maintaining very enthusiastically that militia records are a sadly undersused resource bearing in mind that so many of us would have had at least one ancestor in the militia.

It would be quite a bus ride right now as I'm in Canada. However, my wife and I are celebrating our 50th aniversry next May and I would think there is a good chance to visit the museums and parishes next year.
