I have a Richard Vallis born abt 1791 in Shepton Montague. He joined the Somerset Militia May 8, 1817 for 5 years and completed his term May 8, 1822. Does anyone have any information on the Somerset Militia?
Hello Bob
You should be able to find some info at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/sidocs.asp?SIR=O40492

Hello Bob,
I don't know if you have typed Vallis into the search here on the forum. HiFly, another forum member, is researching the same name, and I think some are from that area. Maybe you have a connection with him.

For some general information on researching the militia, try here

I was chatting to someone the other day who was maintaining very enthusiastically that militia records are a sadly undersused resource bearing in mind that so many of us would have had at least one ancestor in the militia.

Hi Bob,
The details of the Somerset Militia are to be found in the Military Museum at Taunton Castle. I know it's a bit of a bus ride for you to get there :D so try www.sommilmuseum.org.uk/ (http://www.sommilmuseum.org.uk/) for general information and www.sommilmuseum.org.uk/article.php?id=5 (http://www.sommilmuseum.org.uk/article.php?id=5) for more detail.

Hello Peter
It would be quite a bus ride right now as I'm in Canada. However, my wife and I are celebrating our 50th aniversry next May and I would think there is a good chance to visit the museums and parishes next year.
