My Gt Granduncle George Smart born in Shearsby Leicestershire 1837.was a coastguard. The 1871 census shows him with his family, wife Anne & children Emily,George & George senior's sister Catherine. He is stationed at Oldstairs Ringwould Kent.

He is listed on the Genuki site mentioned here. However, when I tried to find his service record on the Archives site mentioned on Genuki but couldn't find him. I'm obviously doing something wrong--just not sure what!!!

Ella, I know that my husband's grandfather was in the Coastguards, and we obtained his service record of the Coastguards. From memory I think I was able to down-load it from NA. I can't think why it's not possible for you to do the same, unless they have stopped doing it now. Possibly someone else may have the answer.

Like you, I did a search, but nothing seemed to come up, unless I looked in the wrong place. :(
