Hello.
I've been browsing the excellent 1861 census CD-roms from ACDB and creating a surname index as I do. The idea being that I can then quickly find entries which may later be of use to me. I am going to begin posting these indexes in messages on this thread. I think I've found a way of doing so, so that they don't take up too much space yet can be converted into tables using a word processor; and ultimately be placed into a spredsheet/database.

Each index will give the Nfk 1861 CD on which to find the relevant parish, also the piece number and folio/page.

The original census is in the care of The National Archives.

The 1861 census can be purchased from:
Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_2433.html)

I am not doing lookups for these indexes. I recommend that you purchase the CD-rom from Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_2433.html).
These indexes are to aid you in finding entries for families which you are researching in Norfolk. Surnames may appear more than once on a census page, but to save space, I have only recorded the name once, check the whole census page to make sure that you have extracted all the entries

I am not doing lookups for these indexes, which are just research aids. Surnames may appear more than once on a census page, check the whole census page. Names are followed by a comma and then the folio/page number.

I am not doing lookups for these indexes. I recommend that you purchase the CD-rom from ACDB http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/acatalog/nfk-census.html
These indexes are to aid you in finding entries in Norfolk. Surnames may appear more than once on a census page, but to save space, I have only recorded the name once, check the whole census page to make sure that you have extracted all the entries

Back in July I recommended this site
http://www.norfolkhistory.co.uk/
and several people seemed to like it.
If you haven't bookmarked it, do so, and if you haven't visited it since July, then do so because lots more info has been added, including some strays.
The latest addition is approximately 4300 MIs for all the parishes of the North Erpingham Hundred and at Holt Hundred. The former were originally recorded by Walter Rye, and the latter by Walton Dew. Their books were printed 1885-1889 so there will be no inscriptions after those dates.

I just looked at the site mentioned by Pam & it is just plain light blue/green with no writing ????? Anyone know what happened ?

It doesn't say "Site not found" just "Done" but nothing is there.

Sadly Honor's site got hacked, as in beyond repair.
However thanks to the wonderful Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/index.php) all is not quite lost.
Copy-and-paste the URL into the box, making sure you delete the 'surplus' http:// .
If you click on the date of Aug 10 2006, you should be able to access the Norfolk site. (Later dates just give you the pale blue blank screen.)

Thanks, that works. I guess you can't use the search engine on the site to search for names now ? It didn't work, and I sort of thought it wouldn't.:)

Seems it's only possible to access info to date 20th Aug 2006, after that, the pretty blue screen.
I have a view on what should be done to these hackers and it involves sharp objects and a great deal of time!
It must be shattering for people who have done such a lot themselves and then willingly share, to be thwarted by these mindless individuals! Can't print what I'm thinking.

Sorry, Elaine, I never thought to try it out. But having to access the pages 'manually' is better than nothing. :)

Ooh, can I have three guesses? Red? Hot? Poker? Otherwise you might find it's already been said (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16952&highlight=honor).
I haven't heard any more from Honor - I think she might have got very disillusioned and decided to abandon the website. Don't try the URL given in that thread by the way. That one really doesn't work. :)
