Hello Spaceman
Wilfred's marriage to Lucy Harvey was in the Jul/Aug/Sept quarter of 1909.
The reference is 8a/191 District Stockport, County Cheshire, Lancashire.
That is all you need to order the marriage certificate.
I have him in the 1891 and 1901 Census as born Longsight, Lancs son of John and Harriett. If this is your man I will continue looking for a birth and death reference.

Geoffers you beat me to it. I got all excited because I have just found it.
It has a most weird transcription.
Name: Wil[FL_]R[E_]D D[E_][As_][R_]D[Eo_][An_] Roylanc[E_]Birth: Sep 1888 - Prestwich, Lancashire
But if you look at the original it is clearly
Wilfred Dearden (note en)

What "original" are you looking at? The FreeBMD scan that was available to the transcriber is not very clear at all.

Peter,
The transcription was on Anc......y of course, who else?!!
But if you click on 'view image' it takes you to what I have always thought were the original pages of the books.
There it is nice and clear.

What you're looking at there is an out-of-date version of the FreeBMD transcription database. The scans however are their own - not the FreeBMD scans.
I'd say as a general rule you're better off using http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ because the database is invariably more accurate and more complete than the copy that the company you mention receive under some agreement or other.

Certainly one should always use the FreeBMD transcription of the index but the images on that certain website are, I believe, from a different filming of the index so if the image on one site is not clear it often helps to look at the other.
I was doing just that recently; FreeBMD had an image of the handwritten index but I was surprised to see that A..y had an image of a typewritten version (at the time of writing I can't recall the period concerned). Mike Foster, in part 1 of A comedy of Errors (page 138 ff) refers to two distinct filmings, one by the GRO itself, the other by the LDS. He comments:
For the most part the LDS fiche is very sharp and clear, showing much finer detail than the GRO fiche ... There is evidence ... that the LDS filming is later than the GRO filming. My recent experience would seem to confirm that.

Further to my previous posting; look at marriages in the March quarter of 1843, FreeBMD has an image of the handwritten index, A..y the typescript version. (I was looking at Barraclough, in case it matters).

This is true. I was merely pointing out that the FreeBMD transcribers did not work from the American company's scans.

Nor it will until they've corrected it. Mutley has reproduced what the FreeBMD transcriber came up with.
To find the entry, you have to use the GRO indexes.

OK Guys,
You know that the Mut is a bit slow on the uptake. You need to spell everything out very simply and in easy words because his little legs are working full time here to keep up with the big fellows!!!
I cannot access the image on FreeBMD, have tried all sorts but no luck. Even if I put in the stupid transcription from An....y then FreeBMD says the name is invalid. I must be doing something wrong as is Spaceman.
However, on An....y I can put in:
Wil[FL_]R[E_]D D[E_][As_][R_]D[Eo_][An_] Roylanc[E_]
in the name field then when it comes up click on image and this is the image I can see.
Is this a GRO index page or LDS scan?

For Spaceman -I hope this is your Wilf enlarged, he is about 11/12 entries up from the last entry on the page:

I am going to click submit now because I am scared I will lose this which has taken me ages to sort. I won't even spell check:D

I got it from the GRO index - remember that freebmd is not complete and not always accurately transcribed.

What does Spaceman need to ask the GRO if he wants a copy of this birth certificate.
Geoffers - Please can I ask where did you find the reference?
I am going to start a new thread re the transcriptions on A.....y because there are loads of pages that have these brackets and underline thingys. Looks like a whole batch has some sort of code marks included with the names.

Geoffers - How did you answer my question before I asked it. Spooky!!!
P.S. Oh I see, you answered Spaceman not me.......
