In 1851 John Morton SOOLEY (44) was living at 71 Oldfield, Elm and was a farmer of 8 acres. HO107; Piece: 1767; Folio: 374; Page: 17
As well as Sarah (30) were:
John 23
Hart M 9 (this is a daughter so is probably short for Harriet)
Esther M 8
Ann M 7
Wm M 5
Fred M 3
George M 1
In view of the age gap between John and Harriet I would imagine that John, the eldest son, was from a previous marriage.

dear sue. thank you for taking your time to look at my family tree. The john morton sooley mentioned i think is my great great uncle. The other John sooley listed in the 1851 cencus with him is his brother i believe and THIS is the one i am trying to trace. This john sooley would have been born in 1828 and was the son of john and susannah, the other john morton sooley was the eldest illigitimate son of susannah!are you confused yet?

Aha! Circumvented the index by omitting the surname and seraching for Elizabeth born in Elm in 1860. Found them correctly written as Sooley but mistranscribed as Scobey.

hiya Sue.
I think i may have solved the mystery!!!The elder John morton Sooley is now looking more likely to be my great great grandfather. My father has just been in and I asked how he knew that John had attended the wedding of George morton sooley. He replied "because his name was on the certificate"I then asked if it had just asked for Georges fathers name and he said yes.So he could have possibly already passed away! He hadn,t even realised that it was just a formality to have fathers name on cert! he just assumed he was there!!!!!!!!!
Well I hope I am right anyway ha ha it solves a lot of mysteries for me! thanks again for your help.|jumphappy

The IGI has a marriage in Elm on 21 March 1826 between a John Morton Sooley and Susannah Goodson. This would seem to be right for the first marriage of the elder JMS on the 1851, with his son JMS Junior (who married Eliza) being born in 1828? Then, if Susannah died, the other children from Harriet onwards would be children of JMS Senior and Sarah Bosworth?

I am the daughter of John Hayden Morton Sooley, his father Frank Edward Morton Sooley was born in 1901 in Elm and his father was Frank Morton Sooley born in 1871. I am just starting to look into the family history for my Dad and it looks like we have a common ancestor.|help|
